Chapter 142: Breaking the Trial: Klaus Lionhart
Chapter 142: Breaking the Trial: Klaus Lionhart
Klaus stood still for a moment, his eyes tracing the path ahead. The oppressive energy of the runes lingered in the air, heavy and suffocating, wrapping around him like chains. The obelisk of the fourth checkpoint still hummed faintly behind him, its influence draining his strength with every passing second. Yet, as he watched Nicholas disappear over the horizon and Alex surge forward with newfound vigor, Klaus didn’t feel frustration. Instead, relief washed over him.
They were all playing dirty.
Nicholas, ever the enigma, had somehow bypassed the runic mechanisms entirely, and Alex... Klaus’s cousin had drawn upon some forbidden power to overcome his own limitations. Klaus knew that Alex’s pride wouldn’t allow him to lose—not to Klaus, not to anyone.
This meant Klaus no longer needed to restrain himself. He could fight fire with fire.
He closed his eyes and let out a slow, steady breath, his mind sinking into focus. The familiar sensation of magic coursed through him as he began weaving his spells.
Second Circle Magic: Featherweight.
A faint gray magic circle materialized beneath his feet, its glow spreading up his body in a soft, shimmering light. His muscles loosened slightly, the weight of his exhaustion easing.
Third Circle Magic: Featherweight x2.
A second circle joined the first, intensifying the glow. Klaus felt lighter still, as though the earth’s pull on him had weakened.
Fourth Circle Magic: Featherweight x4.
Four overlapping circles now glimmered around him, and his body became unnaturally light, almost weightless. The strain on his muscles faded, replaced by a sensation of buoyancy. It wasn’t perfect—he could still feel the lingering drain of the runes’ power on his strength—but it was enough to let him move freely again.

Klaus opened his eyes briefly, letting the gray light fade from his vision. "If they want to cheat," he muttered to himself, "then I’ll show them the proper way to break the rules."
Closing his eyes once more, Klaus turned his focus inward, into the depths of his soul where his true strength lay. In the void of his inner world, four eyes opened, each glowing with a subtle, otherworldly light.
As the first eye opened, Klaus’s perception expanded. The world around him transformed into a tapestry of energy, where every living thing glowed faintly. He could see the nearest trainees, their auras flickering as they struggled forward.
He closed his eyes again, letting the fourth eye guide his focus. His perception zeroed in on the fifth checkpoint, locking onto its energy signature.
"Third Circle Magic: Blink."
In an instant, the world around him distorted. Space twisted and compressed, and Klaus felt the peculiar sensation of being pulled forward by invisible threads. When the distortion faded, he stood before the fifth checkpoint, the obelisk looming over him like a silent sentinel.
Klaus opened his eyes, a victorious grin spreading across his face. "So it really is possible to use Blink this way. How interesting."
He placed his hand on the obelisk, feeling its cold surface hum to life.
As the obelisk activated, the familiar sensation of power draining from his body returned. The runes carved into the stone lit up, their glow mirrored by the bracelets on his wrists. Klaus staggered slightly as his strength was reduced once more, this time by a factor of five.
The oppressive weight pressed down on him, threatening to crush him where he stood. But Klaus was prepared.
Second Circle Magic: Featherweight.
Third Circle Magic: Featherweight x2.
Fourth Circle Magic: Featherweight x4.
The overlapping spells shimmered around him, counteracting the worst of the obelisk’s effects. While his body still felt heavier than before, he could move with relative ease—a feat that would seem miraculous to any onlooker.
Klaus straightened, his grin returning. "You might drain my strength, but you won’t stop me."
Closing his eyes once more, Klaus allowed the fourth eye to guide him again. The map of energy unfolded in his mind, revealing the path to the sixth checkpoint and beyond. Nicholas was still ahead, but Klaus’s unconventional methods had leveled the playing field.
He whispered to himself, his voice steady and confident. "Let’s finish this test."
With a final glance at the obelisk, Klaus began preparing his next move. The trial was far from over, but for the first time, he felt truly in control.
If the others wanted to cheat, they’d soon learn that no one broke the rules better than him.
