Chapter 108: Chimerical Humans
Chapter 108: Chimerical Humans
Regardless of his usual temperament, Arendt was a smart person. There was no one who could deny it now.
It was impossible to diminish the ability of a man who could come up with all sorts of schemes and lead even the most absurd operations to succeed.
Arthur stared blankly in Arendt’s direction.
‘Honestly, I’m angry.’
Because there was nothing he couldn’t do.
After being released from prison, he started to wield a sword a little, but his skills improved rapidly, and now he was not at all inferior to the other knights of the Third Division.
In addition, he was quick to judge situations and had the ability to execute them, and the courage to back them up was unparalleled.
But if Arendt’s talents were all listed, so many that they couldn’t be held with both hands, and asked Arthur which one was the best, of course…
“Arendt, can we talk for a moment?”
“Ah, my ears are ticklish. Is there a nobleman barking?”
It was a very frustrating thing.
‘Is it okay to leave them alone?’
Arthur looked at the two people from a distance.
. It was a combination of words he had never heard before.
Even Arthur, who was familiar with Arendt’s antics, felt dizzy, so Arcus von Eckhart, who heard those shocking words, was also dumbfounded and could only stare blankly at his brother’s back.
Regardless, Arendt paid no attention and began to give his horse water.
Henry, who had gotten off the carriage and approached him, smiled awkwardly.
“Lord Arendt, what can I say… he is groundbreaking in many ways.”
“Haha… I’m sorry.”
“It is not something Sir Arthur needs to apologize for.”
“Still, I’m sorry.”
Anyway, he felt like he should apologize.
It’s been a few days since they left the palace.
As they continued their journey, they took a short break to rest their horses.
The sky was extremely high and clear, and the wide fields that the road crossed seemed to literally represent peace.
Although the schedule was not very relaxed, it was okay to enjoy the feeling of being on vacation at times like this.
Despite such leisure, the group caught between the brothers’ fight was in a state of mortal pain.
Richt, who was standing next to Arthur, added a word.
“Lord Arcus doesn’t give up easily.”
“That guy is quite stubborn.”
Henry chimed in from the side.
Even as they were engaging in idle conversation, Arcus was once again trying to get closer to Arendt.
Then, he tried to talk to him casually, but this time Arendt struck first again.
“The nobles must be happy. No matter how capricious I may be, everyone seems to accept it.”
“…”
His sarcasm was top-notch. The listener couldn’t help but be dumbfounded.
Finally, Arthur, unable to stand watching, interjected.
“You are of noble birth too.”
“Ah, that’s right. But that was all in the past. It’s been a while since I was kicked out of the house.”
As Arendt continued, Arcus’ face gradually turned ashen.
Henry smiled vaguely as he watched the scene.
“Leave him alone. It’s his own fault. It’s all his fault.”
“Well… that’s true, but.”
Anyone who saw the scene unfolding before their eyes would feel pity for Arcus, but in any case, the one who had to bow down right now was none other than Arcus.
Richt let out a short sigh and asked an unusually personal question.
“Are you a long-time friend of Sir Arcus?”
“Yes, I’ve known him since I was in the academy.”
“Even back then, those two… were they not on good terms?”
Arthur, who had been listening quietly, chimed in, and Henry nodded.
“Maybe. Actually, I don’t know much about it. He’s not the type to talk much about his family… and I didn’t know that he had a younger brother named Arendt until recently.”
“You said it hasn’t been that long…?”
“I heard a rumor around the time Lord Arendt joined the Imperial Knights that the second son of Count Eckhart had a great talent for swordsmanship.”
Henry smiled bitterly.
“It didn’t take long for the story to change that his personality was no joke.”
“…”
He was like that. He was still like that now. He was just as difficult to handle then as it was now.
They began to watch Arendt and Arcus again.
“Oh, was that too harsh of a thing for someone who was kicked out of the family to say?”
“…”
“But since I have an open mouth, I should say whatever I want. That way, I’ll at least have some value after being kicked out.”
It was Arendt himself who said he would not take it even if given a name like that, but that was not important now.
“I think that bastard is doing that on purpose.”
“I agree.”
Richt nodded quietly at Arthur’s words.
If Arcus hadn’t followed him around like that, Arendt would have definitely chased him around and harassed him.
“Why? Should I hold the reins for you?”
“That, Arendt.”
“Lord Arcus, representing Count Eckhart, should not ride the horse himself.”
“Arendt, so…”
“Or, would you like me to prepare something for you? Water to wash your feet?”
“I was wrong…”
Arcus, exhausted from the continued attacks, was eventually forced to bury his face in his hands.
The most surprising thing about all this was that Laius just stood there watching.
Surprisingly, he was the one who still hadn’t given up on teaching Arendt manners. He was the kind of person who would have grabbed Arendt’s head five more times if he had seen him like that, but now, for some reason, he was just standing far away and pretending not to know.
He could hear the conversation, so his facial muscles twitched occasionally.
That behavior, too, could be interpreted if they thought about it a little.
Although Laius was famous for not letting his personal feelings get in the way of everything, there was one exception to this.
By condoning Arcus’ verbal beating, he subtly revealed his intention to take Arendt’s side.
It seemed as though Count Eckhart’s eldest son’s suffering would continue for some time.
They started their journey again and reached a small village at sunset.
Laius, who had been assigned rooms by the innkeeper, gave the largest and best room to Henry and Arcus.
“You guys will stay here today. It is a small space, so it may be very uncomfortable, but I would appreciate it if you could bear with it for just one day.”
“Don’t worry, Captain. I’m used to traveling.”
As Laius spoke, bowing his head slightly, Henry smiled and waved his hand.
“The meal will be brought to your room. We have other things to do, so we cannot be there with you, but we will be nearby, so we will come running right away if necessary.”
“You don’t have to worry so much. Thank you for your consideration, Captain.”
After giving a brief bow, Laius left the two in the room.
“I’m telling you, Commander Laius is a really cool guy. I think I wouldn’t mind risking my life working under someone like that.”
“…”
Henry let out an exclamation, but Arcus kept his mouth shut and did not respond.
Henry chuckled, reading something in the silence.
“Are you jealous?”
“Commander Laius de Winfried lost his entire family when he was young and worked his way up to his current position on his own.”
Arcus, who had been silent for a moment, finally opened his mouth.
“It’s not right to say lightly that I envy what he’s gained in the process.”
“That’s true, but even putting that aside, isn’t it amazing that he was able to handle Arendt?”
“…I can’t deny it.”
Arcus sighed and rubbed his face.
His face clearly looked tired, perhaps because of the long day of talking to Arendt.
Henry, who had been staring blankly at the sight, asked in a quiet voice.
“Aren’t you going to say anything?”
“What.”
“The reason you came out of the territory.”
“I won’t do it.”
A firm response came back.
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to use it as an excuse.”
“Anyway, you’re old-fashioned too.”
Henry pursed his lips, but then kept his mouth shut, as if he had no intention of interfering further.
There was a brief pause in the conversation between the two, and after a while, Arcus let out what may have been the umpteenth sigh and got up.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going for a walk. Don’t wait for me, eat first.”
Leaving those words behind, Arcus left the room.
As he went down the stairs, he saw the restaurant on the first floor.
It was quite noisy around dinner time. The employees were busy serving food and drinks, and the customers were chatting and eating.
Arcus, who was standing on the landing and looking down, soon discovered a familiar back of the head.
‘Arendt?’
And next to him were Arthur Norbert and Laius de Winfried.
At some point, they changed into their casual clothes and found themselves eating at a table with other people.
‘Did I know he could get mixed up in a place like this?’
He couldn’t help but doubt his eyes.
His younger brother, who usually liked cleanliness, absolutely hated sharing dishes with other people. The Count’s house had dishes specifically for Arendt, and the servants even took care of them separately.
But now Arendt was drinking without hesitation from a glass that must have been used by someone else.
Even the lower floor was so crowded and noisy that he felt uncomfortable even being there. It wouldn’t be a place where someone who didn’t even like to have a normal conversation, unless he was a noble, would easily fit in.
After a while, Richt von Crisanta, who had gone out, also joined the table.
Arthur was talking to Arendt, and Richt seemed to agree with what was said. Laius, who was absorbed in his meal, pushed the new dish that the owner had just brought in in front of the knights.
It was a strange sight.
Even Henry, who was quite outgoing for a duke’s son, said he would rather eat separately in his room, and he himself did not have the courage to join them.
Although Arthur Norbert was the only one of commoner descent among them, no one seemed to be dissatisfied with the idea of mixing in with the commoners and eating casually.
He couldn’t take his eyes off Arendt, who was stuffing food into his mouth diligently while chatting with his seniors.
Perhaps that was why he sensed Arendt’s impulsive behavior before anyone else in the restaurant.
Arendt smiled meaningfully.
‘What?’
Arthur and Richt, seeing the same thing, stopped eating and frowned. Laius also widened his eyes and put down his fork.
But it was already too late.
Before anyone could stop Arendt, he grabbed the attention of the owner who was passing by.
“Oh my, what else do you need?”
Perhaps because he had disclosed his noble status when he booked the room, the owner treated him very politely.
Arendt naturally ordered more drinks and opened his mouth.
“But sir, haven’t you heard any interesting stories recently?”
“Huh? Interesting stories… what are you talking about?”
Although he didn’t raise his voice that much, Arendt’s voice, which had been buried in the commotion, could be heard clearly all the way to where Arcus was.
“No, it’s nothing.”
Arendt spoke in a tone that clearly contained something. As the owner tilted his head in puzzlement, the other guests around him also began to look at the knights one by one.
“Hey, hey! What are you doing?”
“Wait a minute. Stop for a moment, Arendt!”
Arthur and Richt waved their hands frantically, but Arendt dodged them with smooth movements, and then he ended up bringing up a taboo topic in a crowded restaurant.
“I was wondering if the scammers who sell the name of God and are on the rise these days have come all the way here.”
Naturally, Arcus, who was watching, couldn’t help but be shocked.
‘This… wasn’t it a sneak attack?’
