Chapter 147 Safe Exit from the Palace
Chapter 147 Safe Exit from the Palace
Yunxi walked out of the Empress Dowager's bedroom and let out a long sigh. The frown on his handsome face relaxed as he had finally managed to deal with the difficulties in the palace.
She was dressed in plain clothes and moved slowly along the palace path, hoping to leave the palace safely and return to the Marquis' Mansion where she could feel at ease.
At this time, the setting sun fell on the palace wall. Yunxi was approached by a group of palace maids, each holding a piece of clothing in their hands, walking hurriedly.
One of the thin and petite palace maids, her face pale, muttered, "Life in this palace is really unbearable!"
A slightly fatter palace maid beside her quickly put her hand over her mouth, her eyes widened and she said in a low voice, "You little girl, are you trying to kill yourself?
Don't make any noise, or your head will be chopped off!" The thin palace maid curled her lips and said nothing more.
Yunxi glanced at them, then slightly leaned to the side and raised her hand to signal, "You go first."
The group of palace maids bowed hastily and walked away quickly.
Yunxi continued walking forward, looking straight ahead, taking steady steps.
When passing by a garden, Yunxi slightly turned sideways to let them pass first.
Continuing walking, we passed by a garden and saw two young eunuchs squatting beside the flowers, carefully pruning the branches.
"Be careful not to damage the flowers. If the master blames us, we will be in big trouble."
One of the young eunuchs said.
The young eunuch was as thin as a bamboo pole, with a pointed face and a pair of triangular eyes. He stared at the scissors in his companion's hand, his face full of tension.
"I know, I know. Stop talking nonsense." Another young eunuch responded impatiently.
The little eunuch had a round head and a chubby face. At this moment, his brows were furrowed so tightly that they could kill a fly. He muttered, "You're the only one who's timid. I know what's going on!"
Yunxi looked at them and felt that life was not easy for the people in this palace.
She walked forward and said softly, "Thank you for your hard work, eunuchs. Once these flowers are trimmed, they will surely add some color to the palace."
The thin eunuch quickly bowed and saluted, saying, "Thank you for the compliment, Madam. This is what we do."
The fat eunuch also nodded and bowed.
Yunxi smiled and continued walking towards the palace gate.
Arriving at the palace gate, Yunxi saw a carriage parked there waiting.
When the coachman saw Yunxi coming, he quickly saluted.
"Madam, I have been waiting here for a long time," said the coachman.
The driver was a sturdy man with dark skin and an honest face.
Yunxi nodded and was about to get in the car when she heard a shout from behind her.
"Madam Yunxi, please stay!"
Yunxi looked back and saw that it was Caiyun, the palace maid beside the queen.
Caiyun was born with delicate features and a pair of eyes that showed cleverness.
"Miss Caiyun, what's the matter?" Yunxi asked.
Caiyun ran over breathlessly, took out a brocade box from her arms and handed it to Yunxi.
"This is a gift from the Empress to Madam, thanking her for her good conduct in the palace."
Caiyun said, breathing slightly with a flattering smile on her face.
Yunxi took the brocade box and thanked Caiyun again: "Thank you for taking the trouble to make this trip, Miss. Please thank the Queen on my behalf."
Caiyun nodded and said, "You are too polite, Madam. I will go back and report first."
After saying that, he left in a hurry.
Yunxi got on the carriage and just as she was sitting there, she heard the driver yell, "Gee!"
The carriage moved forward slowly.
As she boarded the carriage, Yunxi's mind raced with thoughts. The palace's affairs were beyond her control.
The carriage moved forward slowly, and the wheels made a creaking sound as they rolled over the cobblestone road.
Yunxi lifted the car curtain and looked at the street outside.
The street was bustling with activity. A vendor selling candied haws, wearing an old apron, shouted in a voice like the sound of a gong: "Candied haws! Big, sweet haws!"
While shouting, he glanced at the children passing by with a smile on his face.
The acrobat had sweat dripping down his bare back and veins popping out on his arms. He swung the big sword with a whirring sound and muttered to himself, causing the onlookers to cheer and clap their hands until they were red.
In the cloth shop, the proprietress, who was as fat as a winter melon and wore a flowery headscarf, held a piece of cloth in her hand and spat, "My dear lady, look at this material. It's so soft. It will make a beautiful dress out of it!"
Suddenly, the carriage stopped.
"What's going on?" Yunxi asked with a frown.
The driver quickly replied, "Madam, there is a group of people fighting ahead, blocking the road."
When Yunxi heard this, he quickly stuck his head out and saw several burly men with their sleeves rolled up, revealing their strong arms, wrestling with each other.
These people had red faces and thick necks, and were cursing. One of them was glaring with his eyes, and the other was grinning, looking very ferocious.
The people nearby were so frightened that they all moved away, some shrank their necks, and some pulled their children to hide to the side.
"Stop fighting, stop fighting!" A white-haired old man stamped his feet anxiously and stretched out his hand to stop the fight, but the men were fighting fiercely and would not listen to him. No one paid any attention to him.
Yunxi frowned even more and said to the driver, "Go and see if you can persuade them."
The driver responded and quickly got off the car to try to mediate. He was also a kind-hearted person. He walked up to the men and shouted at the top of his voice: "Gentlemen, please stop fighting. If you have something to say, please talk it over nicely!"
But the men were in the middle of a brawl and didn't care. The driver, seeing he couldn't stop them, went to try and break up the fight, pulling on one and tugging on the other, until he was exhausted and breathless.
After a while, the driver finally persuaded them to leave.
"Madam, now that he has been persuaded, we can go now." The driver said, wiping the sweat from his face.
The carriage continued to move forward and finally left the city. Yunxi looked at the green mountains and clear waters in the distance. The green mountains rolled up and down like a giant dragon lying there.
The trees on the mountain are lush and green, and the leaves rustle in the wind.
The green water flows slowly, and the surface of the water shimmers, as if a layer of broken silver was sprinkled on it.
Yunxi took a deep breath, her tense nerves gradually relaxed, and a smile appeared on her face.
The carriage bumped along the way and finally arrived at the Marquis' Mansion. As soon as Yunxi got off the carriage, she saw the maid Cui'er jumping towards her like a little rabbit.
"Madam, you are finally back. Everyone was worried about us." Cui'er's eyes were wide open and her face was full of anxiety.
Yunxi smiled and said, "I'm back safely."
When I walked into the mansion, I saw that the servants were all busy.
"Madam, please go back to your room and rest. Dinner will be ready soon."
While directing two servants to move things, the housekeeper spoke to Yunxi with a flattering smile on his face and beads of sweat on his forehead.
Yunxi nodded and walked towards her room. As soon as she stepped into the room, she saw her personal maid Xiao Cui making the bed. The little girl was bent over, her braids swaying with her body.
The room was still the same as when she left, everything was so familiar.
Yunxi sat on the bed and sighed softly. This trip to the palace had really exhausted her both physically and mentally.
Soon, Cui'er came to call Yunxi for dinner. The little girl was out of breath from running, her face flushed. "Madam, dinner is ready. We're waiting for you to come over."
At the dinner table, Yunxi briefly told everyone about what she had seen and heard in the palace.
"Everyone in this palace has so many things on their mind." Yunxi frowned and poked the food in the bowl with her chopsticks.
"Madam, what exactly is going on?" A young maid couldn't help but ask with wide eyes.
"Hmph, those ladies in the palace appear to be friendly on the surface, but who knows how much they're fighting behind the scenes.
And those eunuchs, their eyes rolling around, calculating things in their minds."
Yunxi curled her lips and put down her chopsticks.
Everyone listened with gusto. One of the maids, while shoveling her food into her mouth, echoed, "That's right. The imperial palace is nothing like what we imagined."
After dinner, Yunxi went for a walk in the garden. The moonlight was like water, spreading across the garden, creating a peaceful and tranquil atmosphere.
"Madam, it's cold at night. You should go back to your room and rest early."
Cui'er followed behind, holding a cloak in her hand.
Yunxi waved her hand and said, "I'll walk a little longer and get some fresh air."
Yunxi walked slowly, her figure reflected in the moonlight, making her look a little lonely.
"Ma'am, you've been tired all day. It wouldn't be good if you caught a cold."
Cui'er advised again.
Yunxi stopped and glanced at Cui'er, "Okay, let's go back."
Back in the room, Yunxi lay on the bed and soon fell asleep.
In her dream, she seemed to have returned to the modern era and saw familiar faces...
