Chapter 387 Searching for Evidence, Perilous Situations
Based on clues provided by their benefactor, Su Jinxiu and Xiao Ling continued their search for key evidence that could prove the truth of the secret history.
With the help of Consort De, Su Jinxiu and Xiao Ling dared not slacken their efforts and immediately embarked on the arduous journey of finding crucial evidence. The clues pointed to an abandoned palace deep within the palace, a place said to hide unknown secrets.
Under the cover of night, the two cautiously made their way towards the abandoned palace. A sinister atmosphere permeated the air, sending chills down their spines.
"Brother Ling, I always feel there's something sinister about this place." Su Jinxiu clung tightly to Xiao Ling's clothes.
"Don't be afraid, I'm here." Xiao Ling held Su Jinxiu's hand tightly, offering her some comfort.
Finally, they arrived at the palace gates, only to find them tightly shut, covered in cobwebs and rusty locks.
Xiao Ling struggled to pry open the lock, and with a creak, a musty, rotten smell wafted out.
The palace was dark and damp, filled with a thick layer of dust. They carefully groped their way forward, hearing the creaking of the wooden planks under their feet with each step.
"Be careful, there might be traps here," Xiao Ling warned.
Just then, Su Jinxiu accidentally bumped into a vase, and instantly a sharp alarm sounded all around.
"Oh no, let's go!" Xiao Ling pulled Su Jinxiu and ran deeper into the palace.
Noisy footsteps came from behind; it turned out that the palace guards had come running after hearing the commotion.
"Stop, don't run!"
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu hid and played hide-and-seek with the guards.
Having finally shaken off the guards, they continued their search within the palace.
Finally, in a hidden corner, they found a locked treasure chest.
"Could this be the evidence we're looking for?" A glimmer of hope flashed in Su Jinxiu's eyes.
Xiao Ling tried to open the treasure chest, but found the lock to be unusually sturdy.
"It seems we need to think of another way."
Just as they were racking their brains trying to figure out how to unlock the door, they suddenly heard a sinister laugh.
"Hahaha, you think you can find evidence so easily?"
A dark figure slowly emerged from the darkness.
"Who are you?" Xiao Ling asked warily.
"I am the one who guards this secret, and you will not get any evidence." The shadowy figure said as it lunged at them.
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu engaged in a fierce battle with the shadowy figure.
"No matter who you are, nothing can stop us from finding the truth," Xiao Ling roared.
After a fierce battle, they finally subdued the shadowy figure and successfully opened the treasure chest.
However, the treasure chest was empty.
"How could this be? Did we come to the wrong place?" Su Jinxiu asked, her face full of disappointment.
Xiao Ling frowned, and after thinking for a moment, said, "No, it must have been moved beforehand."
Just when they were feeling desperate, Su Jinxiu discovered a small hidden compartment at the bottom of the treasure chest.
"Brother Ling, look!"
Hidden in the secret compartment was a yellowed parchment, which seemed to contain important information.
Just as they were about to examine the scene closely, they heard the footsteps of more guards outside.
"It seems there's no escaping it this time."
In their search for evidence, they faced numerous assassination attempts and traps, living in constant peril.
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu, clutching the precious parchment, were convinced they had found crucial evidence, unaware that an even greater danger was quietly approaching.
As soon as they stepped out of the abandoned palace, a cold arrow shot from the shadows.
"Watch out!" Xiao Ling reacted quickly, pulling Su Jinxiu behind him and dodging the fatal arrow.
Before they could catch their breath, a group of assassins in black emerged from all directions, each wielding a sharp blade and with a menacing look on their faces.
"Kill them and retrieve the evidence!" the assassins shouted in unison as they pounced on them.
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu stood back to back, engaging in a fierce battle with the assassins. Xiao Ling was highly skilled in martial arts, wielding his longsword with deadly precision; Su Jinxiu was equally formidable, wielding a dagger and skillfully countering their attacks.
But the assassins kept coming, and they gradually ran out of energy.
"This can't go on; we must find a way to break through," Xiao Ling said as he fought.
Just then, Su Jinxiu noticed a flaw in the assassins' defenses and shouted, "Brother Ling, come with me!"
Taking advantage of the chaos, the two broke through the assassins' encirclement and ran towards a secluded path in the palace.
However, they hadn't run far when another trap appeared before them. The ground suddenly collapsed, and they fell into a bottomless pit.
"Ah!" Su Jinxiu screamed.
As Xiao Ling fell, he held Su Jinxiu tightly, trying to protect her.
The bottom of the pit was filled with sharp wooden stakes, and one could easily be impaled if one was not careful.
"Watch your step!" Xiao Ling warned.
They carefully avoided the wooden stakes, searching for a way out.
The assassins' mocking laughter echoed from above: "You can just wait to die down there!"
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu did not give up and finally found a narrow opening in the pit wall.
"Jinxiu, climb out first." Xiao Ling lifted Su Jinxiu up.
After Su Jinxiu climbed out of the cave, she laboriously pulled Xiao Ling up.
Before they could even rest, another group of pursuers caught up with them.
"We can't let them escape!"
Xiao Ling and Su Jinxiu continued their escape. The palace roads were intricate and complex, and they were like lambs lost in a maze.
"Where is this? We seem to be lost," Su Jinxiu said, panting.
"Don't be afraid, we'll find a way out eventually," Xiao Ling comforted her.
Just when they were exhausted, they came to what seemed to be a dead end.
"Are we really at our wits' end?" Su Jinxiu said in despair.
Xiao Ling carefully observed his surroundings and suddenly noticed a loose brick on the wall.
He pushed hard, and a hidden door slowly opened.
"Let's go in and take a look."
The two entered through a hidden door, which led to a dark passage.
The passageway was filled with a pungent odor that made people dizzy.
"Cover your mouth and nose, be careful, it might be poisonous," Xiao Ling said.
They endured the discomfort and groped their way forward.
Suddenly, a low roar came from the front.
"What is it?" Su Jinxiu's heart tightened.
A huge beast leaped out of the darkness, baring its fangs and claws as it pounced on them.
