Chapter 231
Chapter 231
When Pei Yunche returned after changing his clothes, he saw the two embracing in the room. Although he felt a pang of sadness, he surprisingly did not go in to disturb them. He simply stood at the door, turned his back to them, and looked up at the sky. The sky had already darkened, but he found it particularly glaring. He blinked, trying to make his eyes feel more comfortable, but his vision remained blurry and he could not see clearly.
He lowered his head again, a sarcastic smile playing on his lips. What right did he have to criticize Nalan Jingwen? He was the outsider.
Nalan Jingwen had already noticed Pei Yunche's presence. Seeing that he hadn't come in yet, she was slightly puzzled. She released her arm around Jinse and stood up. "Let's go, let's have a meal together."
She reached out her hand to Jinse, who lowered her eyes slightly, a smile in them, and gently placed her hand on Jinse's, grasping her warm and strong hand.
Nalan Jingwen led him outside and saw Pei Yunche standing outside the door. Pei Yunche had his head down and his face was not visible. He seemed to be lost in his own world. Nalan Jingwen patted his shoulder and Pei Yunche immediately came back to his senses and raised his head.
By the soft moonlight, I could see his reddened eyes.
Nalan Jingwen remained calm, glanced at him, and said, "What are you doing standing here?"
Pei Yunche forced a smile at her, but it was stiff and looked worse than crying.
"It's nothing, I just felt cool outside and wanted to enjoy the breeze."
Pei Yunche's voice was a little hoarse, and he seemed to realize it, so he shut his mouth and stopped talking.
Want to cool off? Want to feel the breeze? Jinse glanced at his thick cloak and his slightly pale face, then pursed her lips and remained silent.
Nalan Jing glanced at it and then looked away, saying calmly, "If you don't want to laugh, then don't."
Hearing her cold voice, Pei Yunche felt even more aggrieved, but remembering her attitude just now, he dared not say anything more and could only lower his head and mumble a "hmm".
"understood."
It was very quiet, almost inaudible, and masked by the sound of the wind.
Nalan Jingwen said no more and pulled Jinse towards the courtyard exit. Pei Yunche could only watch their backs. Their tightly clasped hands felt like needles pricking his heart, extremely painful.
They were like a perfect couple, so well-matched that no one else could ever get in their way.
Pei Yunche was pampered by his family since childhood and had never suffered any hardship. He was fearless and had everything he wanted. However, he stumbled when it came to Nalan Jingwen. If it were according to his previous temper, he would probably have made a scene that everyone in the capital knew about, forcing Nalan Jingwen to marry him and ensuring that no other man would ever appear in her life except for Pei Yunche.
But he dared not do it now. Nalan Jingwen was not the kind of person who would do whatever he said. If he really dared to do it, Nalan Jingwen would truly sever all ties with him and never see him again.
This was not the outcome he wanted. He wanted to marry her and become her husband.
Therefore, he doesn't mind being a little wronged.
Pei Yunche watched the two walk further and further away, his heart sinking, almost to the bottom. His eyes were dull and lifeless, and he was completely lost, as if his soul had been emptied.
Nalan Jingwen stopped halfway through his walk and looked back.
"Still not following?"
The voice wasn't loud, but it was clear enough for everyone to hear. This one sentence, falling into Pei Yunche's ears, was like heavenly music, like someone suddenly pulling him out of the water when he was about to drown.
He suddenly looked up, his eyes sparkling, his expression excited, his lips trembling, unable to utter a single word for a long time.
Upon hearing this, Nalan Jing said, "Have the kitchen make your favorite Jiangyao Clear Soup. It won't taste good when it's cold."
Jinse also smiled and looked at Pei Yunche, saying, "Young Master Pei, this was specially ordered by the Prince to be made by the kitchen, knowing that you like it."
Pei Yunche then walked towards them, jogging to Nalan Jingwen's side.
"You still remember..."
Nalan Jing sighed and said helplessly, "How could I not remember?"
Pei Yunche couldn't hold back any longer. His lips trembled, and he burst into tears. He hugged Nalan Jingwen and cried uncontrollably, as if he wanted to vent all the grievances he had accumulated over the past few months. Soon, a large patch of Nalan Jingwen's shoulder was soaked with tears.
Jinse stood obediently to the side, not disturbing them, while Nalan Jingwen held his hand tightly and gently patted Pei Yunche's back with his other hand.
Pei Yunche cried until his eyes were swollen and his voice was hoarse before he finally stopped. Nalan Jingwen stood there holding him, and only after seeing that he had stopped crying did he speak, "I didn't mean to blame you..."
Before she could finish speaking, Pei Yunche immediately interrupted her.
"I know!"
He knows everything. It was his own fault for speaking recklessly and for making a mistake. Nalan Jingwen doesn't blame him, and he is already very satisfied.
Nalan Jingwen stared at him intently with his dark eyes for a long time before saying, "In that case, let's go have a meal together."
Based on her understanding of Pei Yunche, she figured he probably hadn't eaten before coming out to find her today.
Pei Yunche nodded, his voice hoarse, "Okay."
Just as Nalan Jingwen was about to leave, Pei Yunche called her back again. She looked back in confusion and saw Pei Yunche holding out his hand to her, "I want one too."
Nalan Jingwen smiled helplessly and took his hand.
"Let's go."
Pei Yunche then laughed.
Leading the two to the front hall, Rong Hengyu and Liu Qishan were already seated and waiting for them. They immediately stood up when they saw them arrive.
"Your Majesty."
Rong Hengyu calmly turned his gaze to the somewhat disheveled Pei Yunche, then quickly shifted it to the three people's tightly clasped hands. He lowered his eyes to conceal the darkness in them, his expression remaining normal.
Liu Qishan called out to Pei Yunche and Jinse, then looked at Nalan Jingwen.
Nalan Jingwen released their hands and said, "Sit down and eat."
She subconsciously walked to the main seat and sat down, Rong Hengyu followed suit, while the other three remained standing, somewhat puzzled. "What's wrong?"
The three men looked at her without saying a word.
Nalan Jingwen quickly realized what was happening and stopped the action of picking up food with his chopsticks.
These people all wanted to sit next to her, but she could only seat two people at a time, which presented her with a dilemma.
Logically speaking, Rong Hengyu should be the one sitting next to her, since he is her rightful husband.
Rong Hengyu thought so too, and without any burden, sat back down to her right, leaving one seat left on the left.
Even with her intelligence and impartiality, she was still at a loss. She looked at Rong Hengyu beside her, wanting him to say something, since he was the king's consort and in charge of the inner court.
But Rong Hengyu just smiled at her and turned away, showing no intention of helping her at all.
Nalan Jing sighed, knowing that he was throwing another tantrum, and gently patted his hand under the table.
Jinse always kept her status low and didn't want Nalan Jingwen to be in a difficult position because of her, so she took the initiative to sit in the seat furthest away from her, showing how sensible she was.
