Chapter 480 Rupture
Chapter 480 Rupture
Yin Mingyue sat alone on the sofa, recalling the scene before she discovered she was being cheated on.
That day, Gu Huai also sent a message saying that he would take her to that French restaurant she had been talking about for a long time that evening.
The sun shone brightly outside the window, casting warm, dappled patterns on the floor, much like her mood at that moment.
She hummed a song as she straightened several soft cushions on the sofa, filling the room with the aroma of freshly baked cookies and butter.
That's when the doorbell rang.
Two crisp sounds broke the quiet and cozy atmosphere of the room.
"Who is it?" she called out, shuffling over in her slippers, thinking that perhaps Huai was up to some unexpected surprise.
As the door opened, light flooded in, outlining a completely unfamiliar figure.
A woman dressed in a simple yet high-quality beige trench coat stood at the door, her face haggard, her eyes filled with a desolation born of the long-term weariness of life.
She was holding the hand of a little boy who looked about four or five years old. The child was timid, but his big, clear eyes were curiously looking at Yin Mingyue.
The woman glanced at her from head to toe, her gaze like a cold probe, making Yin Mingyue feel inexplicably uneasy.
"Does Gu Huai live here?" The woman's voice was dry and emotionless, yet carried a heavy, almost judgmental tone.
Yin Mingyue froze, her heart skipped a beat, and she subconsciously replied, "He...he doesn't live here, this is my home. Who are you?"
The woman remained silent for a few seconds, a silence so oppressive that Yin Mingyue could hardly breathe.
Then, she spoke very slowly, each word like it had been chilled to the bone: "I am his legal wife, Su Wan. This is his son, Gu Nianhuai."
She gently nudged the little boy, "Niannian, say hello to Auntie."
The little boy shrank back, didn't say anything, but just gripped his mother's clothes even tighter.
"Wife...son?" Yin Mingyue heard her own voice falter, as if through a thick layer of cotton. "Impossible...you're lying! Huai said he..."
He said he was too busy with his career to settle down until he met her.
He said he wanted to give her the grandest wedding, right by the sea, where she would wear the most beautiful wedding dress.
He said their child's eyes must be like hers, bright as stars.
Su Wan's lips curled into a faint, cold smile, the sarcasm and pity within it like a dull knife, slowly cutting into Yin Mingyue's mind.
"It seems he forgot to tell you the truth again."
Just then, a familiar, deep voice sounded from behind, carrying a perfectly measured hint of pleasure: "Mingyue, I've arrived ahead of time. The location of that restaurant..." Gu Huai's voice trailed off.
Yin Mingyue turned around abruptly.
Gu Huai stood a few steps away at the intersection of light and shadow in the stairwell, holding an exquisite dessert box in his hand. The smile on his face froze the moment he saw the scene at the door, and then quickly faded, leaving only a carefully concealed but still flawed look of panic.
But he recovered so quickly that Yin Mingyue almost thought her momentary loss of composure was just her imagination.
He didn't look at Yin Mingyue, his gaze fixed on Su Wan and the child at the door. His brows furrowed almost imperceptibly, and his voice deepened: "How did you find your way here?"
The little boy's eyes lit up the moment he saw him. He broke free from his mother's hand, ran over happily, hugged his leg, looked up at him, and called out in a clear, loud voice, "Daddy!"
Those two words, like two precisely fired bullets, pierced through all of Yin Mingyue's hopes.
She trembled, her face turning deathly pale, and she instinctively grabbed the door frame to steady herself.
Gu Huai's body stiffened visibly. He looked down at his son who was clinging to his leg, and when he looked up again, his face was adorned with that familiar, helpless yet indulgent smile that Yin Mingyue knew so well. He reached out and pulled Yin Mingyue closer with remarkable ease, his fingertips gently brushing across the corner of her mouth, picking up a small crumb left over from the cookie she had just eaten.
"What are you yelling about?" He said casually, even with a hint of teasing, his gaze falling on Yin Mingyue's bloodless face. "This is a poor student that President Gu sponsored in his early years. His family is struggling financially, and he comes to see me occasionally. The child is young and doesn't know any better, so he calls any older man 'Dad' randomly."
He squeezed Yin Mingyue's icy fingers, his smile impeccable: "What, are you jealous already? How silly, don't you know who I only have in my heart?"
His tone and expression, as always, carried an indulgent and doting quality.
If it weren't for the child named Niannian clinging tightly to his leg, looking at him with eyes full of dependence, Yin Mingyue would almost have succumbed to his charms again, just like countless times before, and believed all his words.
Sponsored impoverished students? Jealous?
An overwhelming chill instantly surged from the soles of my feet, freezing my limbs and bones.
Looking at Gu Huai's still handsome and gentle face, she saw for the first time the unfathomable hypocrisy and coldness behind that gentleness.
She abruptly pulled her hand back, the movement so forceful that Gu Huai's smile faltered slightly.
Su Wan had been observing coldly the whole time, and only now did she speak softly, her voice revealing no emotion, only endless weariness: "Gu Huai, you promised the child's tuition and living expenses next month."
Gu Huai frowned, pulled a card from his wallet, handed it over, and said impatiently, "I know, hurry up and leave, don't cause trouble here."
Su Wan took the card without saying another word, or even glancing at Yin Mingyue again. She took the little boy's hand, who kept turning back to look at her, and walked into the elevator.
The corridor fell silent.
Gu Huai turned around and tried to take Yin Mingyue's hand again, his tone softening: "Mingyue, don't be angry, it's just some business..."
"Don't touch me!" Yin Mingyue took a step back abruptly, her voice hoarse and trembling uncontrollably.
She raised her head, her bloodshot eyes fixed on him, as if trying to see into the darkness of his heart. "Gu Huai, tell me the truth."
Gu Huai's gentle expression gradually faded. He looked at her silently for a few seconds, a faint hint of impatience flashing in the depths of his eyes, but he still coaxed her, "Mingyue, you've always been the most sensible. You're just an insignificant person, don't make a fuss about this, okay? We're going to have French food tonight, you've been looking forward to it for so long."
"Sensible?" Yin Mingyue repeated these two words, a huge, absurd grief and indignation suddenly gripping her.
She suddenly laughed, a broken and desolate laugh, while tears rolled down her cheeks without warning.
Without saying another word, she turned around abruptly and slammed the door shut with a loud bang, completely shutting out Gu Huai and his nauseating tenderness.
Leaning against the cold door panel, she slowly slid down to the ground, her body trembling violently.
That "sensible" person, like a key, unexpectedly opened a dark gate.
