Chapter 17 These jobs are naturally meant for women.
The two quickly bent down to take a shower.
Even with their heads down, they could still feel the gazes around them.
Several young wives huddled together, whispering among themselves:
"See those two newcomers? They have such fair skin."
"Yes, she has a great figure, and you can tell she's never done any manual labor."
"Those from the city are just different..."
Wang Xiuying was also in the bathhouse. She was standing not far from Lin Weiwei and the others. When she heard these discussions, her face turned very ugly.
She looked down at herself; she was thin, flat-chested, and had dark skin.
Looking at Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan, a surge of jealousy welled up inside her.
On what grounds?
Why are they born into good families and are also good-looking?
Why are they allowed to marry military officers when they can't do anything else?
Wang Xiuying gritted her teeth and deliberately raised her voice, saying, "What's the use of having fair skin? It can't fill your stomach. We working people should act like working people."
After she said this, several women around her echoed her sentiments:
"Yes, Sooyoung is right."
"What's the use of just looking good? You have to be capable."
"Look at Xiuying, she's thin but strong and works very efficiently."
Hearing this, Wang Xiuying felt a little better, and then glanced at Lin Weiwei and the others with a provocative look in her eyes.
Lin Weiwei heard this and retorted directly, "Oh, you're making it sound like some people don't want to grow. Well, that's true. Breasts and butts aren't things that some people can just grow if they want to."
Lin Weiwei's words were a slap in the face to all the women in the bathhouse.
Many people looked down at their own figures.
shriveled...
Lin Weiwei was right just now.
They want to grow taller too!
But meat isn't that obedient!
As soon as Lin Weiwei said this, she noticed that the women around her were looking at her rather unfriendly.
Well, she felt she had angered everyone.
Damn it, I've been tricked by that woman Wang Xiuying again.
Lin Weiwei lowered her head awkwardly, not daring to look at everyone. She whispered to Su Wanwan, "Wanwan, damn, I need to improve my arguing skills. Did I say something wrong just now?"
"It's okay, you're telling the truth. Some people just can't grow bigger breasts and butts no matter what they want. Just ignore her," Su Wanwan replied in a low voice. "Let's wash ours."
Lin Weiwei listened to Su Wanwan's words, hesitated for a moment, afraid of saying the wrong thing again, and continued taking a bath.
But Wang Xiuying wouldn't stop there, and continued, "Some people are just so delicate. They can't even sweep the floor properly and need someone to teach them. I don't know how they'll manage in the future."
That's a more direct way of putting it.
Lin Weiwei couldn't hold back any longer and turned to look at her: "Comrade Wang, who are you talking about?"
Wang Xiuying was taken aback by the direct question and paused for a moment, but quickly recovered: "Whoever I'm talking about knows the answer in their heart."
"You..." Lin Weiwei wanted to swear.
Su Wanwan tugged at her, then looked at Wang Xiuying and said calmly, "Comrade Wang is right, we do need to learn how to work properly. But since Comrade Wang is so capable, all the work in the family compound will be handed over to you from now on. Anyway, you like to do it, and you can do it."
As soon as she said that, the women around her laughed.
Wang Xiuying blushed: "What...what do you mean?"
"It doesn't mean anything," Su Wanwan said. "I just feel that Comrade Wang is so proactive, we should give him more opportunities to show his abilities. For example, the toilet will be dirty again tomorrow, and we'll have to trouble Comrade Wang to clean it."
Wang Xiuying was so angry she couldn't speak.
The steam in the bathhouse made people dizzy.
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan quickly finished their showers, wrapped themselves in towels, and jogged out to change their clothes.
I finally feel refreshed, but the pent-up frustration in my heart hasn't dissipated.
"What kind of working-class attitude is she? I think she's just jealous!" Lin Weiwei muttered as she put on her clothes.
Su Wanwan buttoned her shirt and said softly, "Forget it, don't bother with her. Let's hurry back, we've had a long day."
The two packed their things and pushed open the heavy wooden door of the bathhouse.
It was already pitch black outside, and the wind on the Gobi Desert was chilly, raising goosebumps on my skin after my recent shower.
A few lights were scattered along the narrow paths in the residential area, all kerosene lamps shining from the windows of each house.
Just as I reached the corner of the bathhouse, I heard a group of men laughing and talking ahead.
Lin Weiwei, with her sharp eyes, spotted Bai Rongbei standing there immediately. He looked like he had just finished showering, his hair was still wet, and he was wearing military trousers and a white vest with a towel draped over his shoulder.
He was surrounded by three or four men in military uniforms, laughing and talking.
"Old Bai, I heard your wife can't even sweep the floor?"
A gruff voice came over, clearly mocking.
Lin Weiwei and Su Wanwan stopped at the same time, looked at each other, and quietly hid behind the corner of the wall.
"Yeah, Rong Bei, did you marry a wife or an ancestor?" another person chimed in. "It's all over our compound. Those two new pampered young ladies sweep the floor like they're painting flowers, but the walls get even more smudged the more they scrub!"
A burst of laughter followed.
Bai Rongbei's voice rang out, calm yet tinged with a hint of helplessness: "We're new here and not familiar with things yet, so let's take it slow. We can learn these things about daily life by helping each other out."
"Oh, listen to that, they're really protecting her!" the gruff voice said again. "If my wife had to work this hard right after arriving, I'd definitely help her out!"
Bai Rongbei chimed in, "It's only natural for us to be considerate of each other, since we're all family. They're from the city and aren't used to life in the Gobi Desert, so we need to give them more time."
Just then, the bathhouse door opened again, and Bai Si'an came out.
He had just finished showering, and his glasses were fogged up with moisture as he dried his hair with a towel.
Upon seeing this group of people, he paused for a moment, then walked over.
"Hey, Technician Bai's here too!" The gruff voice turned to Bai Si'an. "Perfect timing! Tell me about your wife! I heard she was taught how to sweep today, but she hasn't learned after all that?"
Bai Si'an wiped his glasses clean and put them back on: "Learning something always takes time. Family matters can always be sorted out if the two of us work together."
"Hey, you two brothers, you're both good talkers!" the gruff voice chuckled. "But then again, the girl came all this way, it's not easy for her."
Bai Si'an nodded: "Yes, it's not easy for anyone. Living together is about mutual accommodation and learning from each other."
Behind the corner, Lin Weiwei's anger softened somewhat, but her lips remained pursed.
Su Wanwan gently tugged at her, and the two listened intently, holding their breath.
"That's true," another voice chimed in, "but in the end, isn't housework still a woman's job?"
Bai Rongbei's voice rang out again, this time deeper: "When starting a family, someone has to take care of everything, inside and outside. Whoever has time should do more; why be so particular? If they're willing to learn, we have to be patient and wait."
Bai Si'an echoed softly, "That makes sense. Take your time, there's no rush."
The group of men laughed and joked for a few more minutes before dispersing.
