Chapter 283: The Rift Giant
The giant avatar at the core of the rift enveloped the center of the Temple of Fallen Light. Runes floating in the void resembled its skin, and every energy fluctuation filled the air with a suffocating feeling. Its towering body completely enveloped the three of them, and its voice echoed throughout the ruins, seemingly directly impacting everyone's soul.
"You are the guardians of the rules, but the era of the rules has passed," the giant said in a low voice. "Why not accept the new order? Why struggle? The river of fate cannot be reversed, and you are nothing more than tools bound by the rules."
“Stop trying to sway us.” Ares gripped the rune sword tightly, its blade gleaming like a beacon of hope. “The existence of the Rift is the real cancer, and we will be the ones to eradicate it.”
The giant slowly raised one of its massive arms, the energy swirling around it forming a huge vortex. With a sudden swing, it unleashed countless energy blades from the vortex, hurtling towards the three.
"Scatter!" Ares shouted, simultaneously drawing a light barrier with his rune sword to block the incoming light blade. Even so, the immense impact still forced him back several steps.
Wagner deflected several blades of light with his battle axe, then charged towards the giant's legs. He roared as he leaped up, slamming his battle axe down on the giant's knee. The powerful impact caused the giant to stagger slightly, but its body remained unharmed, as if completely unaffected by ordinary physical attacks.
"Its body is too strong!" Wagner gritted his teeth and took a few steps back. "This thing doesn't even leave a trace!"
Selena quickly adjusted the power of her sniper rifle, aiming at the constantly flashing crack runes on the giant's body, trying to find an opening. However, the runes seemed to have a mind of their own, constantly changing positions, making it difficult for her to lock onto the target.
“These runes are its weakness!” Selena analyzed calmly. “But it’s actively covering its weakness; we need to find the pattern!”
The Rift Giant sensed the three's intentions, and the runes on its body suddenly emitted a blinding light. It raised its hands, and its entire body began to spin rapidly, forming a massive energy storm. The ground of the Temple of Meteorite was instantly torn apart, and the surrounding ruins seemed to be sucked into an abyss.
"Get back!" Ares used his rune sword to create a barrier that protected the three of them, but the barrier quickly cracked under the impact of the energy storm.
Wagner gritted his teeth, "This guy has no intention of letting us get close to the core!"
Selena quickly observed the eye of the storm, her eyes catching a runic dot on the giant's chest. "The core area is near its chest! That's where the energy converges!"
"The chest?" Ares stared at that area, the light from his rune sword trembling slightly. "We must break through its defenses!"
"I'll draw its attention!" Wagner roared as he charged out of the barrier, brandishing his battle axe and launching a fierce attack on the giant, trying to get its attention to him.
At the same time, Selena quickly adjusted her sniper rifle's firing mode, her target being the core rune on the giant's chest. However, the giant seemed to have already anticipated her intentions; its left arm suddenly swept across, creating a gust of wind that completely disrupted Selena's aim.
“I need more time!” Selena shouted.
“Leave it to me.” Ares’s eyes sharpened. He leaped into the air, his rune sword drawing a blazing arc as it aimed straight for the giant’s arm joint. The powerful sword energy caused the giant to pause momentarily, and Selena seized the opportunity, pulling the trigger.
The bullet struck the rune on the giant's chest precisely, and the area erupted in a blinding flash of light. The giant roared, and its entire body began to tremble violently.
As the runes on the giant's chest were struck, cracks began to appear in its defenses. The runes on its body gradually dimmed, revealing the core of the giant's chest through the fissure. That core resembled a beating heart, surrounded by countless distorted energy waves.
"The core has been exposed!" Selena shouted. "Destroy the core while its defenses are weakened!"
Wagner seized the opportunity, charging towards the giant's chest and slashing his battle axe at its core. However, just as his attack was about to hit, the giant suddenly unleashed a powerful energy shockwave, sending him flying several meters away.
“Its core has a protective mechanism!” Wagner got up from the ground, a trace of blood at the corner of his mouth. “We need a stronger attack!”
Ares gripped the rune sword tightly, feeling the resonance between the sword and its core. He took a deep breath, his gaze resolute as he looked at the giant. "This time, I will end it with my power!"
Selena and Wagner exchanged a glance and nodded simultaneously. "We'll cover you."
Ares channeled all his energy into the runic sword, the light emanating from its blade illuminating almost the entire ruins. He charged at the giant with all his might, the sword in his hand like a shooting star, aimed straight at the core of the rift.
The giant seemed to sense a threat, frantically waving its arms in an attempt to stop Ares. But Wagner and Selena had already blocked its path of attack, drawing its attention with their battle axes and sniper rifles.
"Keep going!" Selena shouted, her bullets striking every rune on the giant's body, clearing a path for Ares.
Ares rushed to the giant, leaped up, and plunged the runic sword into the very center of its core. The core emitted a piercing shriek, and the giant's entire body began to crumble, the runes peeling away piece by piece, turning into countless specks of light that dissipated into the air.
"It's a success!" Wagner shouted, a tired smile on his face.
As the core of the rift was destroyed, the entire Temple of Meteorite began to tremble violently. The surrounding ruins collapsed, and huge cracks stretched from the ground to the sky.
"This place is about to collapse!" Selena warned. "We have to get out of here immediately!"
The three rushed back to the spaceship, started the engines, and left the soon-to-be-vanished ruins. As the spaceship warped to a safe zone, they looked through the portholes and saw that the Temple of Fallen Light had completely vanished into nothingness, and the traces of the rift had disappeared as well.
“Another core has been destroyed.” Wagner gasped for breath, leaning his battle axe against the side. “But why do I feel like it won’t end so easily?”
Ares gazed at the rune sword and said softly, "Because the core will of the rift is still hidden. We have only cleared a part of it, but the real battle is yet to come."
Selena pulled up the star map, and new energy anomalies gradually appeared. "It's guiding us step by step closer to its core intentions. The battle that follows may determine the fate of the universe."
The three exchanged a glance, their eyes shining with determination despite their exhaustion. They knew the war was far from over, and their belief was the last barrier against the rift.
