Chapter 28: Super Brave!
Chapter 28: Super Brave!
As soon as the Floating Dragon recovered from its dizziness, it immediately felt pain.
Chen Yan and Hua Miao's knives couldn't cut very deep, but they couldn't withstand the endless slashing. The pain from each wound was enough to make it twitch uncontrollably.
It frantically inhaled, trying to float up again, but the soft skin on its neck was full of holes left by crossbow bolts. It couldn't inhale as fast as it leaked out. Seeing that two gleaming katanas were about to fall again, it had no choice but to face the ground and expel all the hypnotic gas from its body.
The milky white mist quickly engulfed its form, but Chen Yan and Hua Miao were prepared. They launched a water moss ball, and the mist quickly thinned out again.
But in that short while, the Floating Dragon flapped its wings and took flight again. Although it flapped its wings vigorously, it didn't fly very high, only about half a meter off the ground.
After being beaten, its expression was no longer ferocious; instead, it looked at Chen Yan with a somewhat aggrieved expression.
Chen Yan was slightly taken aback.
Seeing that Chen Yan had no intention of attacking it, the Floating Dragon took a few hard breaths, its neck slightly bulging, and it flew away unsteadily, as if wearing a deflated balloon.
Harley jumped out of the bushes behind Chen Yan.
"Why don't you keep attacking it? You might actually succeed in hunting it. You'd be the first person in the stronghold to kill a Sleeping Dragon, and everyone would envy you!"
Chen Yan flicked his katana to shake off the stains.
"Forget it, I think it's kind of pitiful."
"Harley, you don't know, it's actually a subspecies of a monster. Its home is 108,000 kilometers away from here. It's not easy for a Floating Sleeping Dragon to leave its home and come here. It usually just eats ants and doesn't cause much damage to the ecology or pose any threat to us. Let's just teach it a lesson."
Harley laughed, then pressed on with a pointed question.
"Are you sure? Can you swear on your conscience that it's not because she has beautiful black skin like mine that you're hesitant to harm her?"
"what?"
Chen Yan was shocked. How could this be related to you?
But then I thought about it again, and the Floating Dragon's soft, dark, patterned black fur was really quite beautiful. Yesterday, when I bumped into it, it smelled quite nice. How could I have forgotten to touch it a few times to test its texture?
Harley looked at the dumbfounded Chen Yan, laughed, and patted him on the shoulder.
"I'm just kidding! You're right, that's why we hunters exist. As the most important link in the ecosystem, we hunters are both witnesses and maintainers!"
She whistled, and the pterosaur circled down.
"Let's go see if the mudfish dragon has surfaced yet."
Luckily, the Mudfish Dragon was indeed there. Even luckier, not only did the Mudfish Dragon trigger the quest, but its cub also triggered the quest.
The larger, whiter ones were posted by Mudfish Dragon.
[Mudfish Dragon issues a quest: If a Mudfish Dragon has no dreams, what's the difference between it and a salted fish?]
[The Barroth is dead! I'm incredibly strong now! I'm going to fight the Diablos! Ten of them!]
[Commission Fee: Mud Fish Dragon Leap/Lung Strengthening/Mud Stirring]
The smaller ones, those with lighter colors, are mudfish larvae.
[A Mudfish Dragon cub has issued a quest request: I don't want to eat fish anymore!]
The fish's innards smelled awful and tasted awful; I almost threw up. I want to eat other monsters' flesh!
[Compensation: Luck]
The Mudfish Dragon's mission was simple and straightforward, and the rewards weren't particularly impressive. However, the rewards for the Mudfish Dragon cubs piqued Chen Yan's curiosity.
Harley was in a good mood for some reason and was happy to play along with Chen Yan's antics. As for the horned dragon, it was easy to find. She looked for a sunken sand pit in the desert, fired a whistle arrow, and a moment later a horned dragon was indeed disturbed by the sound and crawled out.
"The horned dragons of the New World are similar to those of the Old World; they are extremely sensitive to sound. Moreover, you don't need to provoke them; just seeing them will make them chase you to the ends of the earth, as they are always in a state of rage..."
Sure enough, they flew in the sky, and the horned dragon chased on the ground, quickly leading them to the swamp where the mudfish dragon was active.
Enraged, the horned dragon paid no heed to any traces of territory and charged straight into the swamp.
The Mudfish Dragon was truly brave. The moment the Diablos charged into the swamp, it leaped out of the mud, swung its powerful tail, and prepared to give the Diablos a good whack.
However, the scream that followed the collision did not come from the Diablos, but from the Mudfish Dragon that had initiated the attack.
It was clearly the one that ambushed and attacked the Diablos first, but the Diablos's tail axe was faster than its tail fin!
The horned dragon roared. It had never been so angry. It was one thing to be bothered by flying insects, but how dare a stinky fish living in the sewers attack it?
It didn't even use its most lethal weapon.
It merely began to slowly swing the double-edged axe at the end of its thick, massive tail. Before the Mudfish Dragon's terrified eyes, the giant axe, carrying terrifying force, slammed down on the Mudfish Dragon's short, thick lower limbs.
As if razor-sharpened, the Mudfish Dragon's pectoral fins, tail fins, and lower limbs were all severed, blood gushed out, and mud splattered everywhere. A single axe strike from the Diablos rendered it unable to escape.
Despite the screaming Mudfish Dragon, the Diablos still wouldn't let it go, swinging its tail axe again, this time smashing it directly into the fish's mouth that was constantly yelling.
With a few cracking sounds, the mudfish dragon's entire lower jaw, along with several plate-like sharp teeth in its mouth, was shattered to pieces, and as blood gushed out, it could no longer let out a scream.
One more axe blow!
This last axe strike was the most devastating. The horned dragon swung it almost the entire way around, its thick carapace bulging from the taut muscles. With a roar, it delivered a powerful blow to the mudfish dragon's head.
A sickening cracking sound spread, the mudfish dragon's head caved in, its eyes rolled back, and its entire body stretched into a straight line as it crashed into the mud, its fate unknown.
Three axe blows shatter the wasteland, I reign supreme! Lord Horned Dragon, I am one of our own!
Harley, who witnessed this, was amazed.
"Are the Mudfish Dragons of the New World really this brave? They actually dared to attack a Diablos?"
Just as the horned dragon was roaring triumphantly to the sky, a small black shadow fell off its nostrils, disappeared into the mud, and vanished.
The two mudfish dragon quest bubbles in Chen Yan's mind popped open.
[Task completed.]
[Strengthen Lungs]: Your lung function has been greatly enhanced.
[Luck]: Your unconscious actions may be the result of good fortune.
A warm current surged forth, splitting into two streams. One stream converged in his lungs, and as the cool sensation dissipated, Chen Yan's breathing gradually became long and deep. As for the other reward, luck, he was still unaware of its specific effects.
I learned from Harley that mudfish larvae have to go through countless twists and turns to grow into adults. The existence of fish-eating creatures and the cruel phenomenon of cannibalism mean that only one or two out of hundreds can successfully grow into adults, and those one or two are incredibly lucky.
"It should work well, right?"
