It was all the same old stuff. Lu Mingfei closed the book expressionlessly and tossed "Introduction to Dragon Biology (Third Edition)" to his right.
Lu Mingfei had witnessed the destructive power of the Apostles in the previous world, but he knew nothing about the dragons in this world. Although he had heard Lu Mingze talk about it, he didn't believe it. If dragons were that powerful, then this world should also be a desolate and bleak apocalypse.
However, the fact that information about dragons in this world is completely isolated from daily life suggests that dragons are no match for humans.
Lu Mingfei rubbed his throbbing temples, feeling a headache coming on.
Could it be that humanity is truly secure? He only needs to come here and coast along?
He read the records of human history spanning thousands of years kept by the hybrids. The dragons were defeated, the Dragon King was sealed away, and the hybrids established a secret organization to maintain world order.
But the victors' history books will not record how close they came to defeat.
Just then, a hand reached out from the opposite side, opened a thread-bound book, and gently pushed it in front of Lu Mingfei.
Ling sat down opposite me at some point, and she stretched out her slender, white fingers to tap on a piece of paper.
This is a reprinted thread-bound book: "Xi Ning·Xingzhou Shahe County Annals·Disasters and Anomalies".
"In the seventh month of autumn in the first year of the Xining era, a great earthquake struck, with a sound like thunder. The earth cracked and springs gushed forth, with black sand and water gushing out. Mountains shifted thirty li, and rivers were blocked, turning into marshes. On that day, the sky and earth were dark and gloomy. A black aura, like a dragon, meandered through the mountains. Wherever it passed, rocks were shattered and houses were destroyed. Three days later, the aura dissipated. Countless people were killed or injured, and only the cries of mourning filled the fields."
King of the Earth and Mountains!
Lu Mingfei was about to say thank you and ask her how she knew what he was looking for, and why she could so easily recall such obscure historical materials…
"Smack."
Another book was placed in front of him; it was an ancient book with a parchment cover and a Latin title embossed in dark gold.
"You came prepared!" Lu Mingfei looked towards Ling's seat, wanting to see just how much information she had prepared.
Ling opened the book, and Lu Mingfei looked down at it. The book was full of distorted letters, like a group of earthworms crawling around.
"I don't understand it." Lu Mingfei scratched his head and told the truth.
Zero seemed to have been waiting for him to say that. She walked around the corner of the table, sat down next to Lu Mingfei, and sat down.
"In diebus illis, aqua quae erat supra caelum et aqua quae erat sub terra..."
"Back then, the water in the sky and the water on the ground..."
"…convenerunt in unum, et facta est abyssus magna, cuius os non videbatur nec fundus inveniebatur."
"They came together to form a vast abyss; its entrance was unfathomable, and its bottom was nowhere to be found."
"Et in abysso habitabat Silentium, et Silentium erat unum cum Profundo. Qui intraverunt in abyssum, non redierunt, quia aqua oblivionis deleuit memoriam eorum."
"In that abyss dwells 'tranquility,' and 'tranquility' is one with 'depth.' All who enter the abyss never return, for the waters of oblivion erase their memories."
Lu Mingfei frowned. Zero's voice had a strange rhythm, like reciting poetry.
Lu Mingfei blinked: "This is... Word of Power?"
Zero stopped and glanced at him sideways.
"This is a work by a Roman alchemist from the second century AD, called the Book of the Sea."
Her finger moved across the pages, pointing to another section.
"It is written here: 'His pulse draws the waters, His sighs stir up a thousand waves. Where there is water, there is His authority; where there is a deep abyss, there is His land. He is the primordial ocean, the remnant of chaos, the ultimate of all things in motion.'"
Only the fire of fires and the water of waters can reach His domain.
"There's another section here," Zero continued.
"Oceanus et Aquarum Rex, Dominus Abyssi, Pater Aestuum."
"King of the sea and water, Lord of the abyss, Father of the tides."
Lu Mingfei leaned back in his chair and thought for a moment.
"So... what exactly is this passage trying to say?" he asked, "Besides praising Him for being amazing?"
"This passage reveals the essence of the ocean and the king of water," she said.
"nature?"
"Water is fluid and cannot be cut. When a sword strikes water, it closes up again. When a flame burns on water, it turns into steam and rises into the sky," Zero explained. "This is the first nature of water—change."
Lu Mingfei wrote down the keywords in his notebook.
"The second nature is pressure." Zero's finger tapped lightly on the parchment. "'His dwelling place is beneath the waters, in the darkest abyss.' The Dragon King doesn't need to contend with this pressure like humans do, because He is part of the water. Water pressure is as natural to Him as air pressure is to humans."
Lu Mingfei thought for a moment: "That's why He can move freely in the deep sea, while humans can't."
"The third essence is tidal force," Zero continued. "'His pulse pulls at all waters'—this is not a metaphor. Certain incantations of the King of the Ocean and Water can directly manipulate the movement of fluids, creating an effect similar to tides. The difference is that tides are global, while His incantations can be localized and highly intense."
Lu Mingfei wrote in his notebook: "Tidal forces → can create tsunamis?"
"Yes," Zero said. "And it doesn't require as much energy as an earthquake-induced tsunami. It can directly apply acceleration to an entire ocean area."
“The fourth essence,” Zero’s voice lowered slightly, “is the relationship between pressure and depth. In alchemical texts, the ‘Abyss’ is a specific geographical concept, referring to ocean trenches. The deeper the water, the greater the pressure. The power of the ocean and the king of water increases with depth; in the deep sea, He is almost invincible.”
Lu Mingfei looked down at the four lines of text on his notebook: Change, Pressure, Tidal Force, Depth Increase.
He asked, "Then what is 'fire within fire, water within water'?"
"That's what the ancient alchemists said," she said. "They believed that 'fire within fire' is the source of all energy, and 'water within water' is the source of all fluids. The ocean and the king of water are personifications of 'water within water.' Only the former can neutralize Him."
"nuclear energy?"
"At least nuclear energy."
Lu Mingfei leaned back in his chair, deep in thought.
Based on the descriptions in the book, the Dragon King's destructive power is indeed comparable to that of the Angels, but it's still too mythical; what he's actually like is hard to say. Furthermore, the Angels possess the S2 mechanism within their bodies, giving them an almost limitless power source. Historical records related to the Dragon King are always accompanied by phrases like "asleep" and "awakening."
This means that the Dragon King's energy is finite, and as long as there is an upper limit to its energy, humanity is willing to sacrifice its lives to fill it. Using the cost of flattening several cities on the spot, and then washing the ground with modern high-yield nuclear weapons, would most likely be enough to completely vaporize the Dragon King.
