Chapter 179 North China Base
Chapter 179 North China Base
"Holy crap, that was incredibly dangerous!" Yang Xiao had just stepped into the safe corridor when, because of the door, it was quite narrow. Although there were quite a few zombies inside, Ji Lang froze the dozen or so zombies in front of him, so the ones behind couldn't get down for the time being. The zombie door at the entrance was also blocked by four or five zombies rushing over because the corridor door wasn't big. When Ji Lang froze it, it became an ice-cold zombie door.
"Wait, where's Lu Yuan?" Zhong Qiang asked, unable to see Lu Yuan anywhere. The other three looked around and realized that Lu Yuan, who was supposed to be at the back, hadn't followed.
"Holy crap! Lu Xiaoyuan!" Ignoring the disgust of the zombies, Yang Xiao pounced on the frozen zombies at the door and peered out through the gap between them, but he couldn't find Lu Yuan anywhere.
"Lu Yuan!" Lin Yun also approached the "zombie door" and looked out through the crack, but there was no sign of Lu Yuan outside. The zombies, having lost sight of them, gradually resumed their aimless wandering.
"I'm going out to find him!" Ji Lang said, about to kick away the frozen zombie blocking the stairwell, but before he could kick it, he heard a familiar voice coming from upstairs in the stairwell.
"Team Leader Lin! Yang Xiao! Are you still down there?" It was Lu Yuan's voice.
"Lu Xiaoyuan! How did you get up there?" Yang Xiao shouted towards the ceiling, but because the stairwell was full of frozen zombies, he couldn't see where Lu Yuan was.
"I used..." Lu Yuan's voice came from upstairs again, "...I used my supernatural ability to teleport!"
“There’s someone else with him,” Yang Xiao suddenly lowered his voice. “Otherwise, he would have definitely said he would use a starship to teleport.”
"Could it be the group I was with?" Zhong Qiang asked.
“Very likely.” Ji Lang and Lin Yun nodded in agreement.
Knowing that Lu Yuan was alright, they began smashing the frozen zombies, since they couldn't get upstairs otherwise. None of the four of them had fire-based abilities, and their small firearms weren't powerful enough to burn them to ashes, so they could only smash them violently.
After smashing a few, they could clearly feel the temperature upstairs rise. Soon, a tongue of fire shot down from upstairs, burning the frozen zombies in front of them to ashes.
"Advanced superpower." Upon seeing the power of the flames, Ji Lang and Lin Yun exchanged a glance. This was one of the advanced superpowers they had sensed before.
"They're not our people, be careful," Lin Yun whispered to Yang Xiao and Zhong Qiang beside him.
"Yang Xiao! Zhong Qiang!" Then Lu Yuan came running down the street. He stopped in front of them and said in a low voice, "They said they were from the North China base, but they don't seem like it."
"Holy crap, you scared me to death, Lu Xiaoyuan!" Yang Xiao finally breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing Lu Yuan unharmed. Everyone had heard his words, but they all acted as if nothing had happened.
"Hello, I am Zhao Qi, the captain of the eighth rescue team of the North China Base." The person who came down with Lu Yuan was the one who used fire-type superpowers to burn all the zombies in the corridor. Ji Lang knew this Zhao Qi before, but he was not very familiar with him. However, he was indeed a soldier who was assigned to the North China Base at that time.
"Hello, I am Ji Lang, the captain of the third rescue team at the South China Base. This is my deputy, Lin Yun." Ji Lang also briefly introduced them. "The other three are survivors from my team."
"Now is not the time to chat. Let's leave here first. There are a lot of zombies around." Zhao Qi didn't ask any more questions and led the five people back to the second basement level.
Five modified military jeeps were parked in the parking lot on the second basement level. These vehicles are now standard equipment for the base. Some private survivor bases, after their establishment, would also acquire a few from nearby military districts or troop encampments. After all, the number of modified luxury cars like those in the Lu Yuan Space is not large in any city in China, and the ones in 4S stores are all unmodified, not as practical as the large jeeps from military districts and troops.
"Get in the car first, we'll head to the temporary camp." Zhao Qi arranged for the five people to get into two cars. Ji Lang and Lin Yun were in one car with him. After saying goodbye to the other team members, they started the cars at the same time.
"Can we drive in here?" Yang Xiao asked Lu Yuan, watching Ji Lang and Lin Yun's car drive away first.
"How would I know?" Lu Yuan was also completely bewildered as it was his first time there. If they had known they could drive in and out, they could have unleashed his G-Wagon downstairs and driven all the way up.
"Haha, this is the Beijing Municipal Research Institute. It's surrounded by important institutions, so the underground network here has been extensive for many years." Their driver chuckled, then stepped on the gas and rammed the zombies charging towards them.
Soon the four cars entered the dark tunnel, but Lu Yuan felt that it should be a subway tunnel, as the ride was bumpy and jolted the three people in the back seat so much that they almost threw up.
"Young man, you'll get used to it." The passenger in the passenger seat was a middle-aged man in his forties or fifties, who looked like a typical Northeasterner. Before getting in the car, Lu Yuan had observed that all of them were at least 1.85 meters tall. Ji Lang, Lin Yun, and Zhong Qiang were fine, but Yang Xiao looked like a minor standing among them.
"What is a temporary camp? Isn't Beijing basically empty? Why is there still a temporary camp?" Zhong Qiang was a little surprised. Beijing was different from G City, where they were before. This place was full of important political figures and top talents. Pei Sihao had mentioned that the Beijing command had sent these people to the four major bases in batches. How come there was still a temporary camp in Beijing now?
"Huh?" The driver in the front seat didn't say anything. The middle-aged man in the passenger seat was stunned for a moment before speaking, "The search and rescue mission at the North China base is almost over. After that, we will transfer the supplies and data to the Central China base, so there will be temporary camps along the way."
"Oh." Lu Yuan nodded from behind, then looked up at the rearview mirror and his eyes met those of the uncle who was observing their expressions in the mirror.
"Want a cigarette?" The middle-aged man didn't seem embarrassed at all. He took out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket. There were only a few left in it. He was clearly reluctant to part with them, but he still shook it at the people in the back seat.
"No, no, no, we're still students." Yang Xiao waved his hand and glanced down at Lu Yuan.
Then, their vehicle fell silent. The car drove from the subway tunnel into the vehicular tunnel, with zombies occasionally lunging at it, but the modified jeep was much sturdier, suffering no damage whatsoever and even knocking away the charging zombies.
