Chapter 6 Complex Emotions
Chapter 6 Complex Emotions
"A few strange guests came yesterday morning. They installed the curtains themselves, but they left in a hurry and didn't take them with them. If you gentlemen don't like them, I'll put them away for them."
The blinds could effectively conceal the person by the window, and Su Yuncheng immediately realized that yesterday, Xie Hanzhang was being monitored not only by the two Japanese spies disguised as vendors outside.
The teahouse was also under surveillance by secret agents, who took Xie Hanzhang very seriously.
"Why would they install these curtains?" Huang Chuanming asked directly.
"I don't know, but they spoke Japanese, so they might be Japanese." The waiter shook his head.
"Japanese?" Huang Chuanming was taken aback, but the waiter didn't say anything more.
In fact, the waiter had already identified Mizuno and his group. The guests were all short and bowed and scraped, something no one else but Japanese people would do.
"Mr. Su, Mr. Huang, what would you like to drink?"
The waiter helped them set out the chairs and asked with a smile, while Su Yuncheng went to the window and looked outside.
After removing the blinds, the room became much brighter, and the street view outside was much clearer.
"A pot of Longjing tea, and two plates of snacks."
Huang Chuanming knew what Su Yuncheng liked, so he immediately placed an order. The waiter wiped the tables and chairs clean, closed the door to the private room, and quickly went downstairs.
From here, Su Yuncheng could see the situation in Qingyu Lane, but he didn't know which building was Xie Hanzhang's house.
In the dream, he appeared directly inside the house and did not see the situation in the yard. If he only observed the outside, he could not tell whether it was the same as in the dream.
"Editor-in-chief, was Xie Hanzhang's murder carried out by the Japanese?"
Huang Chuanming asked cautiously. He was not a special agent and had not received any training, but he had been working with Su Yuncheng for half a year, collecting intelligence.
Based on Xie Hanzhang's identity, the presence of Japanese people and blinds here, Huang Chuanming could easily deduce that yesterday's murderer was Japanese.
"Very likely, but we don't know who did it."
Su Yuncheng nodded slightly. Huang Chuanming's emotions were complicated, mixed with pity and anger.
Su Yuncheng glanced at him; Huang Chuanming seemed a bit off today.
This is not the time to investigate Huang Chuanming's emotions. Su Yuncheng pointed to Qingyu Lane and said, "They are probably watching that area. Go and find out later if Xie Hanzhang lives there, and if so, which building he lives in."
Su Yuncheng knew yesterday that Xie Hanzhang lived in Qingyu Lane and had even discovered the disguised spy, but he couldn't say it out loud and had to pretend he didn't know anything.
"I'll go now."
Huang Chuanming opened the door to the private room and quickly went downstairs.
He was indeed angry. Mr. Meng was right; many Japanese people, afraid to do things openly and honestly, preferred assassination.
They exclude all forces that oppose them and do not allow any voices that are unfavorable to them.
Hongkou, the Japanese-populated area.
This is the name given to them by Westerners; the Japanese prefer to call this place the Japanese Concession.
Although it wasn't officially called a concession, it was in fact a concession, completely controlled by the Japanese, who also established many Japanese institutions in Shanghai here.
Special Higher Police Division, Mizuno Takuma returned to his office.
Yesterday they killed Xie Hanzhang, but unfortunately they failed to capture any Red Party members. Fortunately, the section chief was unaware of their plan to capture Red Party members, so the failure wouldn't affect him much.
After successfully killing Xie Hanzhang, everyone received praise and rewards.
"Recount yesterday's events in detail again."
Mizuno summoned two of his men who were disguised outside. He was confident in their abilities; Xie Hanzhang, being a mere scholar, would never discover their identities.
If he hadn't been exposed, he would have been able to monitor Xie Hanzhang and his accomplices yesterday, and not only kill Xie Hanzhang, but also successfully arrest a group of Communists.
Back in Northeast China, he earned his promotion to major by conducting surveillance in this way.
Unfortunately, something went wrong yesterday, which he greatly regretted.
"Yesterday there were two people having breakfast there, speaking Japanese, one with a Kyoto accent and the other with an Osaka accent. They were speaking loudly and startled each other."
Fumihiko Kobayashi began by saying that his disguise yesterday was that of a shoeshine man.
"Japanese?"
Mizuno asked in surprise. His subordinates explained that their accents came from Kyoto and Osaka respectively, so they were most likely from China.
When people from other countries speak Japanese, it's easy for them to tell that they aren't Japanese.
"I haven't been able to identify them yet, so I can't confirm if they're one of our people. By the way, they said something big happened in China recently, and the younger one is a student who took time off work to ask the older one about it."
"What's the big deal?" Mizuno asked immediately, staring intently at him.
"They were whispering to each other, but I didn't hear them."
Fumihiko Kobayashi did not hear what the two were saying, and he still feels regretful.
"A confidential conversation?"
Mizuno narrowed his eyes. He did know that a major event had indeed occurred in the country recently, but not many people in Shanghai knew about it.
The fact that this person knows about this matter suggests they have some influence.
"Xiao Lin, go and find out their identities right away, and be careful."
Mizuno gave the order directly: as a special agent, he would investigate any suspicious persons who appeared at the scene, especially since the target was alerted because of them, so they had to be investigated even more.
Xiao Lin was on site yesterday, so it wasn't suitable for him to go on fieldwork again. However, he was the only one who noticed the two people from yesterday, so he had to be sent this time.
Mizuno believed that with Kobayashi's abilities, he would definitely be able to complete this task well.
"Hai," Kobayashi Fumihiko replied, bowing slightly, and quickly left.
"Yesterday you were closest to Xie Hanzhang and his group, and you saw the Red Party members who were with Xie Hanzhang. Immediately try to find out their identities."
Mizuno then looked at the vendor who was pretending to be frying peanuts, and the latter bowed his head, accepted the order, and left.
Mizuno didn't have high hopes for the escaped Red Army members. Shanghai was so big, with more than four million people. Finding someone there without a photo, someone you'd only seen before, would be incredibly difficult.
There are no new leads right now, so let them investigate. If they find something, it will be a pleasant surprise; if not, there will be no loss.
Huang Chuanming returned to the teahouse very quickly.
"Editor-in-chief, we found him. Xie Hanzhang lives at No. 5 Qingyu Lane and just moved here a few days ago."
Xie Hanzhang had only been living there for a short time and rarely went out, so not many people knew him. Huang Chuanming had to ask several people before he could find out where he lived.
"Have some tea first, then we'll go take a look."
Su Yuncheng was not in a hurry. He poured tea for Huang Chuanming and then went to the window to look at No. 5 Qingyu Lane.
An ordinary courtyard, the private rooms of the teahouse don't show the scene inside the house. Could it be the scene he saw in his dream?
After finishing their tea, Huang Chuanming led Su Yuncheng to No. 5 Qingyu Lane. The gate was locked, and nothing seemed amiss from the outside.
"Chuanming, have someone open the door. Let's go in and take a look."
Su Yuncheng gave the order, and Huang Chuanming left immediately, returning shortly afterward with someone.
Xie Hanzhang had just rented the house, and the landlord lived nearby.
Huang Chuanming asked the landlord to open the door under the pretense of renting the house. When the landlord opened the door, he kept praising how good the house was.
"Come in."
The outer door opened quickly, and the landlord led them into the yard, saying as they walked, "This house is really nice, very clean inside, perfect for a family."
