Chapter 20 Temporary Commission
Chapter 20 Temporary Commission
As evening approached, Anastasia received a phone call from Jolina.
Hearing that Mike was still in bed and had no intention of leaving the apartment, Jolina on the other end of the phone visibly breathed a sigh of relief.
It seems that Jolina was just worried and confused. No matter how rebellious or dissolute Mike was, he wouldn't go to the Floating Life Bar to drown his sorrows at this critical moment.
"The Bureau of Investigation has already been here. They took away the three male corpses from last night, as well as the two corpses from before."
Jolina on the other end of the phone got down to business. Her tone was very serious, indicating that her handover with the Bureau of Investigation was not going smoothly.
"The head of the Upper District sent a five-man combat team; they don't seem to be here to investigate."
The Bureau of Anomalies will form teams of transcendents with complementary abilities. Teams usually do not exceed five people and are divided into investigation and combat teams based on their strength.
The investigation team is usually led by a "dangerous" transcendent, and is responsible for investigating and handling some abnormal events that are not very dangerous.
The combat squads are led by transcendents with a danger rating of "high risk". A full-strength combat squad is capable of dealing with most abnormal events and has a formidable combat power.
The five-man combat team sent by the head of the Upper City branch of the Bureau of Investigation was probably not targeting the person who planned the attack, but rather Anastasia, who was responsible for protecting Mike.
"In addition, my investigation has made progress."
On the other end of the phone, Jolina suddenly lowered her voice, as if afraid of being overheard.
"I can't explain it to you in detail right now. Someone left me at the police station to organize case files and wouldn't let me leave the station even for a moment."
Anastasia was not surprised at all by this.
It's impossible for the police department's middle or upper management to remain indifferent or have no reaction when Jolina brings back four bodies in such a grand manner.
Restricting Jolina's personal freedom and keeping her at the police station to organize case files is probably just an appetizer. If Jolina accidentally discovers something, it's not impossible that they will take action against her.
Police officers and detectives are not immune to dying in the line of duty.
"Miss Angel, I'll explain in detail after I've finished what I'm doing. Someone's coming—"
Before she could finish speaking, Jolina hurriedly hung up the phone.
Anastasia, holding a receiver in the apartment, had a feeling that something was about to happen to the beautiful detective.
Being in enemy territory, risking danger to deliver messages, and saying things like "wait until I finish what I'm doing"—it all sounds like something bad is about to happen.
Should we go to the Upper East Side Police Station to check if Jolina is alright?
Or call that old geezer Father Lawrence and see his reaction, to test the depth of their relationship.
Anastasia's mind raced, and in an instant, she came up with several ways to deal with the situation. Although these methods were somewhat radical and ruthless, they could all achieve the desired result.
However, before setting off, I should eat dinner first, so as not to go hungry while running errands.
Just then, Mike, who had been lying in bed all day, finally got up from his bed, walked unsteadily out of the bedroom, and leaned listlessly against the door frame.
"I heard you on the phone." Mike's eyes were slightly vacant, probably because he was hungry; he hadn't eaten in twenty-four hours.
"It's Miss Joyce on the phone." Anastasia put down the receiver. "The situation at the police station might not be good. She's likely being watched. Is your relationship with her friend public knowledge?"
"Yeah, what's there to hide?" Mike said. "Jolena and I are just friends, not in any shady way."
Anastasia didn't see it that way; they were just friends.
"How about I go to the police station later?" Mike continued. "If I make a public appearance at the police station, they'll probably think twice, right?"
Clearly, Mike wanted to make his friendship with Jolina clear, so that the bad guys in the police station would hesitate to act against him.
Mike was attacked by unknown assailants the night before, and his friend, who happened to be a detective, was in trouble at the police station the next day. The bad guys at the police station would have to think twice before getting involved.
"Do you know that as soon as you leave the Riverside Apartments, you could be attacked a second time?" Anastasia said. "Miss Joyce might not be in any danger; she might just be bait to lure you in."
"Do I look like an idiot?" Mike complained, the third time he had said that in twenty-four hours.
"Anyway, he's not very smart," Anastasia said. She didn't think Mike was stupid; he just hadn't experienced the harsh realities of life and lacked enough experience, which was why he seemed dull.
Hopefully, after this attack, Mike Montagu won't be so clueless anymore.
"Okay, I can't leave the apartment, I can't be the bait, but you can," Mike said. "You're amazing, even the guy next door is very polite to you."
Apart from Anastasia, Mike had never seen the Beyonder next door treat anyone so politely.
"First of all, my request is to protect your safety, not to follow your orders." Anastasia did indeed have the idea of going to the police station.
Mike didn't expect to be able to command Anastasia, which is why he proposed to go to the police station himself. As long as he was there, Anastasia would definitely go with him.
"Secondly, my mandate is to protect your safety, and Miss Joyce's name is not on that mandate," Anastasia continued, her words harsh and implying a sense of abandonment.
This is called putting the unpleasant truth upfront, lowering Mike's expectations.
Anastasia could go to the police station; if Jolina were truly in danger, she could help her.
However, she wouldn't risk her life to rescue the beautiful detective. If things didn't work out, she would turn around and leave without hesitation.
Anastasia originally just wanted to lower Mike's expectations, but the kid seems to have misunderstood.
He said, "I can add money."
It's a misunderstanding, a complete misunderstanding. Anastasia really didn't have that thought.
Mike continued, "You can treat this as a temporary commission. You can name your fee, as long as I can afford it."
Anastasia was envious. Although she wasn't greedy, she wanted to experience the thrill of throwing money around. It was just too extravagant.
“I grew up with Jolena, and I can’t watch something happen to her,” Mike continued. “As long as you ask, as long as I can afford it, I won’t haggle with you.”
Throughout the past day, Mike had been in a state of semi-consciousness, and when he was fully awake, he thought about many things.
Mike also realized that the attacks against him would not end there, but would continue until the attackers achieved their goal.
The enemy is in the shadows, while we are in the open. Continuing to passively defend ourselves is not a solution; trouble will inevitably arise sooner or later.
Rather than making a mistake yourself, it's better to take the initiative and find the person hiding in the shadows. Even if you can't find them right away, you should at least stop them from reaching out.
Offering Anastasia a large sum of money to get her to go to the police station was both to ensure Jolina's safety and to teach the police a lesson.
At the same time, this was also a test for Anastasia to see if she would accept the temporary commission.
If Anastasia accepts this temporary commission, Mike will have many more temporary commissions waiting for her, and Montagu will not sit idly by.
Are you sure you're conscious right now?
Anastasia looked at Mike, and she roughly guessed what he was thinking. The two of them finally reached an agreement.
"Even though my stomach is growling and my head is a little foggy, I'm pretty sure I'm perfectly clear-headed," Mike said.
Anastasia walked straight up to Mike and roughly grabbed his face with both hands, her slender fingers flipping up and down Mike's eyelids.
"Yes, I'm definitely not talking in my sleep."
Mike didn't resist, nor was he capable of doing so. He continued, "So, want to pull off something big with me?"
"Mr. Montague, do you know what you're doing?" Anastasia asked. "I'm a Transcendent, and my actions can be quite ruthless at times. Are you sure you want to do something big with me?"
Mike knew of the existence of the Beyonders, but he did not understand this group of extremely dangerous patients.
The attack last night made Mike realize for the first time how dangerous the Beyonders were, and just how brutal they were.
Rupert Courtney, a seemingly fierce and rough man, is actually a gentle person in Mike's eyes. He wouldn't even hurt a small bird, and his favorite thing to do is groom horses.
Yet this gentle man went berserk last night, attacking his fellow human beings like a madman, smashing their heads to pieces, splattering their brains, and even denting the hard road surface with his fists, cracking it inch by inch.
If Rupert Courtney is like this, what about Anastasia Angel, who is even more powerful? What would she be like if she went crazy?
Mike didn't know how crazy Anastasia could go, or how much destruction she could cause. The only thing he was sure of was that she would be even more brutal than Rupert.
"Are you hesitating, Mr. Montague?"
Anastasia still held Mike's face in her hands, smiling as she said, "You should hesitate. Some people say that people like us are a scourge of the world and should be eliminated."
The existence of transcendent beings is dangerous to everyone; their existence constantly threatens the world of normal people.
"Mutation is an abnormal disease caused by pollution," Mike said.
Anastasia released her grip and took a step back.
“I saw this sentence in the old man’s notes,” Mike continued. “I don’t know what pollution is, or what abnormal pathology is.”
Anastasia stared intently at Mike; her recently adopted son seemed to have grown up all of a sudden.
"You're just sick. Is it wrong for someone to be sick?"
Anastasia smiled. Her son had indeed grown up, but not by much.
"I've thought it through," Mike continued. "I'm going to fight back. Montague will not sit idly by and wait to be killed."
"Very good, it's been a pleasure working with you." Anastasia extended her right hand. "My accomplice."
