Chapter 41 The Dark Passage
Chapter 41 The Dark Passage
Shantal, the city of war, sixth district.
Although conditions are better than in the slums of the Seventh District, they are still far inferior to those in the inner city.
Primary handicrafts have emerged here.
Many residents make a living by working as servants, laundromats, grooms, or selling their labor for wealthy families in the inner ring.
Nevertheless.
Of the seven districts in the city of war, the sixth district remains at the bottom.
Beneath the surface of harmony lurks chaos and evil.
The houses are mostly built of stone and wood, and most of them are dilapidated.
The streets were narrow, and a faint smell of feces permeated the air, clearly indicating a lack of maintenance.
After Kane met up with Reed and his group, Reed quickly assigned tasks.
He looked at Kane and said:
"We must have solid evidence before we can put them on the gallows."
"Kane, you and Sienna go in together and pretend to discuss the purchase of 'raw materials'."
"Withdraw immediately after confirming the intelligence, and wait for the city guards to come and surround us with crossbows and other equipment."
He then turned to the rest of the group and made arrangements for them meticulously:
Kane and Sienna pose as buyers to deceive the other party.
The thief Gavin sneaked in from the side and secretly collected the transaction ledgers.
As for Braden and Reid themselves, they served as emergency response forces.
To avoid alerting the enemy, the city guards will act in 15 minutes.
Kane nodded in agreement.
He looked at Sienna.
She carried a harp on her back, but no longbow, only a decorative short sword at her waist.
So he left the scimitar behind and hid two daggers instead.
The two headed toward the headquarters of the "Night Owl Society".
The organization disguised its base as a fabric trading company.
The store entrance was bustling with people at the moment.
Sienna suddenly raised her wrist slightly.
Before Kane could react, he felt a soft hand gently take his arm.
A faint, sweet fragrance emanating from the girl lingered around my nose.
"As required by the mission."
Sienna smiled at him, the corners of her lips curving upwards.
Their tone was so natural that it was as if the two were a couple shopping together.
Kane nodded knowingly, his mind free of any distractions.
The two pretended to be a couple and entered the shop together.
The store is densely packed with shelves displaying a variety of fabrics, including linen, wool, cotton, and leather.
The servants and apprentices were busy shuttling back and forth.
A well-dressed chamber of commerce manager stepped forward and asked with a smile:
"What would you like to do for me, gentlemen?"
"Our store not only has fabrics from Nordic countries, but also has goods from the other five countries in stock."
Sienna patted Kane lightly and leaned close to his ear, whispering a few words in a seemingly intimate manner.
He then turned to the steward, lowering his voice slightly:
"Our needs might be a bit unusual. Would it be possible to discuss this privately?"
"It's a business related to 'that aspect'."
The manager's eyes lit up instantly, and his smile became even more meaningful:
"sure."
He led the two into the depths of the shop and closed the door behind him.
He then raised his hand and pressed it against a stone wall, pushing it hard.
There was a loud "boom".
A dark passage, seemingly bottomless, was revealed.
The flickering torchlight in the passageway cast an unpredictable shadow on the steward's face.
"Shall we go inside to talk?"
Sienna's sharp gaze swept across the passageway as she asked a question.
"Only by going inside can you see what you want."
The manager replied with a forced smile.
Sienna looked serious, quietly squeezed Kane's hand, and said in a deep voice:
"There's no need to go inside, let's talk here."
How fresh are the goods, and what are their prices like?
"If we are satisfied, we will bring people from the Mage Tower to conduct an evaluation."
Upon hearing this, the manager suddenly grinned.
That smile was full of undisguised malice.
Kane's heart sank, and he warily released Sienna's hand.
Almost at the same moment, a sharp whooshing sound suddenly came from inside the passage!
Sienna, however, had already dodged and flicked her wrist, her short sword striking the arrow shaft and deflecting the arrow.
With a "thud," the arrowhead pierced deep into the stone wall.
"You're not planning to do business anymore?"
Sienna questioned in a cold voice.
The manager's smile vanished completely, revealing a狰狞 (zhengning, meaning ferocious or hideous) face:
"You think we're fools that you mobilized such a large force of city guards?"
"Moreover, those mage towers have been closed for a long time, saying they're not accepting any more goods for the time being."
He stared intently at Kane and his companion, his tone sinister:
"Honorable Night's Watch, now it's just the two of you; no one can come to your rescue!"
Before the words were finished, two more people slowly walked out of the passage.
A tall, burly man, holding a giant axe in both hands.
Another dark-skinned man carried a bow and arrows on his back.
"Kill the men, capture the women alive!"
"And while you're at it, grab that harp; it's an enchanted piece of equipment!"
The manager said fiercely.
Kane sighed helplessly upon hearing this:
"Why can't they just kill the woman and arrest the man?"
Sienna gave him a light tap and quickly made a tactical hand gesture.
She leaped backward abruptly, simultaneously letting out a low shout:
Cover your ears!
Kane did as instructed immediately.
Sienna plucked the strings, and a thunderous roar erupted.
The sound waves echoed within the confined space!
"Thunderous Trick Break!"
The foreman at the front, suppressing his dizziness, took the sword handed to him by his companion and thrust it straight at Sienna.
Sienna parried with her harp, then instead of retreating, she advanced and counterattacked with her short sword.
At the same time, Kane, wielding two daggers, faced the two enemies who had surrounded him.
He looked at the burly man and archers closing in and smiled helplessly:
"If you surrender, I may spare your lives."
His response was a whistling flying axe!
Kane dodged to the side, the axe embedding itself deeply into the wall behind him.
The dark-skinned man seized the opportunity and slashed from the side with a short knife.
With a thought, Kane's blood flow accelerated, and he swung his dagger to parry.
"clang".
The dagger and the short sword collided violently, and a tremendous force suddenly erupted.
"How is that possible!"
The dark-skinned man looked horrified, feeling a sharp pain in his hand, and nearly dropped the dagger.
Before he could react, Kane suddenly accelerated, and another dagger slashed across his throat.
With a "pfft," blood gushed out.
The dark-skinned man clutched his throat and fell straight down.
"Damn it!"
The burly man roared and charged forward again, brandishing his giant axe.
But soon, his movements suddenly froze.
The massive body slowly collapsed to the ground, blood gushing from its neck.
Kane looked at the two corpses on the ground and thought to himself:
"As expected, with the accelerated blood flow..."
"Ordinary Tier 1 melee fighters are no match for me."
He sheathed his dagger and turned to go support Sienna.
Sienna noticed this and was startled:
"So fast?"
This moment of distraction immediately revealed a flaw.
Suddenly, the steward threw out two short swords, aiming straight for Sienna's chest and abdomen!
Sienna's pupils contracted sharply; it was too late to completely avoid it.
Just then, Kane suddenly lunged forward, brandishing his twin daggers.
With two sharp clangs, the short sword was knocked away.
"Should we spare their lives?"
He asked in a calm tone.
Sienna composed herself and replied:
"No need. Attacking the Night's Watch is punishable by death."
The manager's expression changed drastically, and he turned around, wanting to rush back into the passage.
But he had only taken two steps when Kane raised his arm, and the dagger was already piercing through the air!
Hearing the commotion, the steward scrambled to the side to dodge, the blade grazing his cheek.
He dodged the obvious blow, but the dagger seemed to be drawn by an invisible force.
It drew a strange arc in the air and suddenly turned back from a blind spot!
The next moment, the cold blade had precisely pierced the back of his neck.
The manager froze, his eyes wide with disbelief.
He stretched out his hand in vain, pointing to the entrance to the passage that was just inches away.
He then collapsed heavily to the ground, lifeless.
Sienna watched this scene with amazement.
"He killed all three of them. He truly deserves the title of 'Blade of Vengeance,' having single-handedly wiped out the Rusty Hand."
"Kane's strength may already be comparable to Captain Reed's."
Just then, a commotion suddenly broke out outside the store.
When Reed and the others arrived, they saw three corpses on the ground.
Kane and Sienna, who were unharmed, couldn't help but glance at each other slightly.
Immediately afterwards, everyone's gaze turned to the bottomless dark passage.
At the same time, a series of clear, clanging sounds of armor growing louder and clearer.
The city guards of the war-torn city have finally arrived.
