Peter slowly woke up, and the first thing he saw when he opened his eyes was a pair of empty eyes.
"Who...who are you?" Peter said weakly. Only then did he realize that he was completely powerless and his chest ached as if he had been hit by a dump truck.
"Who am I?" Matt asked expressionlessly. "Kid, I should be the one asking you who you are. If I hadn't reacted quickly, you might have already kicked me to death."
Matt still felt lingering fear when he thought about the power of that kick. If his body hadn't been enhanced, that kick would have killed him instantly. He wondered how a child could be so strong.
"Oh, I'm sorry." Peter tried to cover his face with his hands, but found his arms were chained. "I thought you were a vampire, that's why I used so much force."
"Are you also investigating vampires?" Matt asked.
"Yes..." Peter said with difficulty, "Could you let me... uh, relax a little, I feel so uncomfortable."
The stark contrast between his previous sense of strength and his current feeling of weakness left Peter feeling utterly insecure.
Matt didn't say anything, but silently reinforced the chains before taking out another spray bottle and spraying it on Peter's face a few times.
Erica gave him both bottles of spray, which were said to be able to make an elephant unconscious for 24 hours, but the boy in front of him wearing ugly pajamas was only unconscious for less than an hour and woke up on his own. He didn't know if it was a problem with the spray or with the boy.
Peter immediately felt much more relaxed and said, "Thank you, masked man."
When these words entered Matt's ears, it was as if the wrinkles in his cerebral cortex were smoothed out in an instant, bringing a unique sense of relaxation.
Is this child simply polite or naive? He's still tied up, yet he can so calmly say "thank you."
Matt felt much more relaxed. He was now fairly certain that the kid had stumbled upon this by accident; he was too naive. He asked, "Tell me why you're investigating vampires."
Peter took a few deep breaths, feeling much better in his chest, and said, "It all started when Ultraman saved me."
Peter then concealed Eddie's presence and told the man in the black and red bodysuit what he could say.
"So you were saved by Ultraman too," Matt said with emotion.
The strong boy's words brought him back to that night, to the splattered blood, the lives lost, and the glimmer of hope in the despairing night.
At first, Matt didn't know that he had been saved by Ultraman. After checking with various sources, he finally realized that Ultraman had saved him.
He firmly believed that Ultraman was a god, and that the light of hope that shone in despair could not be explained by any aliens. Only those who had truly fallen into darkness could understand that it was definitely the power of a god.
"Even?" Peter said in surprise, "Were you also saved by Ultraman?"
Matt didn't say anything, but simply placed his hand on Peter's shoulder.
Peter suddenly had a strange feeling; he seemed to see a bright light in his own heart, and at the same time, he saw the light in Matt's heart.
"What...what is this?" Peter asked, feeling with an even more accurate sense than his spider-sense that the strange man in the tight suit in front of him seemed to be one of his own.
Matt said solemnly, "Kid, you are also one of Ultraman's chosen ones. Light is the link, and someone will inherit it and make it shine again. We are both His chosen messengers, spreading the light of hope."
In fact, Matt discovered this ability shortly after being rescued. Whenever he strengthened his resolve, he could feel this light in his heart, and his body would be strengthened when he brought hope to others.
This further solidified Matt's ideals. He wanted to change this place, to change Hell's Kitchen, to pull this damned place out of hell, and to bring hope to those born in Hell's Kitchen who were powerless to change it. He believed that this was the reason the light chose him.
"Spread the light of hope? What does that mean?" Peter asked.
Having not experienced the impact of this death, Spider-Man doesn't understand what a superhero is or what responsibility is. He only has empty ideas, not flesh and blood.
Instead of answering, Matt unlocked the chains binding Peter and extended his hand, saying, "I think we can formally introduce ourselves. My name is Matt Murdock, you can also call me Daredevil."
Peter stood up, shook Matt's hand, and said, "My name is Peter Parker, a high school student. You can also call me... well, Spider-Man!"
"Hahaha." Matt laughed. "Spider-Man is a fitting name, but you're far from enough, kid. Go home. Vampires aren't as simple as you think."
"I'm not some little brat!" Peter bristled like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "I'm strong." He struck a boxing pose he'd learned from TV.
"You're all strength and no skill. If you can block one of my blows, I'll take you to find the vampires and teach you how to use the power of light," Matt said, raising his stick.
"Okay, bring it on." Peter stared intently at Matt's stick.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh—"
Three consecutive whooshing sounds rang out.
Peter's forehead was beaded with cold sweat, and his cheeks and nose were burning with pain. The stick was too fast for his spider senses to react.
Matt's stick stopped on Peter's nose, and the bright red nose, combined with his earlier boasts, made him look like a clown.
The martial arts that the Stick Master passed on to Matt were not just for show; they were the real deal. Coupled with his body, which had been strengthened through countless trials, Matt's overall strength was now even greater than Peter's after his enhancement.
After all, Spider-Man is still in the growth stage of just awakening his superpowers.
This was the second time Peter had seen Chinese martial arts, and his eyes shone with longing: "Is this martial arts? Can I learn it?"
Matt put away the stick and said, "Controlling power and mastering technique can't be achieved overnight. If you really want to learn, you can come find me later."
Peter Parker is very talented, a fact Matt has to admit, and he was showing off so many skills with the intention of nurturing Peter.
More importantly, Peter was also chosen by the light. As a senior who had received the light's favor earlier, Matt felt it was necessary for him to avoid taking detours.
Because I had been caught in the rain, I wanted to hold an umbrella for someone else.
After that was settled, Peter hurried home to avoid being discovered by his Uncle Ben for not returning home that night.
From then on, Peter would come to Matt to learn skills whenever he had time.
Matt never holds back, not only teaching martial arts but also sharing his experience in dealing with people and the principles of being a good person.
The two became like master and apprentice, growing more and more familiar with each other. On this day, Matt found another gathering place of vampires.
