Chapter 4 The King's Tomb, Lynn's Copy
"Barbecue?"
Gainau looked puzzled and got up to look for the source of the fragrance.
Soon, he noticed a candidate sitting leisurely by the campfire, who was slowly roasting a bird on a sharpened twig over the fire.
The bird's feathers were roasted until they turned golden brown, and the grease dripped into the flames, making a sizzling sound.
The rich aroma of meat wafted from there.
The bird's form was clearly that of a meteorite bird.
Snapped!
Gainau's expression remained unchanged, but a crack appeared in the teacup in his hand.
"Who is that candidate?"
Gainau's voice was unreadable, "He seems to have messed up the exam's target."
Zanze tilted his head and glanced in that direction, his eyes showing no particular emotion: "I can't see anything special about it."
While they were talking, Lynn had already torn off a golden-brown roasted bird leg, blew on it, and stuffed it into his mouth.
"The taste is alright, but the meat is a bit dry," he commented.
From afar, one can only sigh in despair at the sight of the Gainawu.
After Lynn finished eating the bird, he felt it wasn't enough, and in a flash, he disappeared from the spot.
Less than half a minute later, he returned to the campfire, this time with two half-dead meteorite birds in his hands.
Just as they sat down, a group of exhausted examinees walked over. All three of them looked disheveled and had exhausted a great deal of magic power, clearly indicating that their pursuit had failed.
"It's too fast, I can't catch it at all!"
"The binding spell was dodged the moment it was cast!"
The three were looking dejected when Lynn's voice drifted over:
Hey buddy.
The three looked up and saw Lynn holding the meteorite bird, which he was restraining with just the strength of his hand.
"Want a meteorite bird? Alive, just caught."
Lynn gave a friendly smile. "Five gold coins each, fair and square."
The three candidates were completely stunned.
"You...you sell this?"
One of them stammered as he asked.
"Yeah, catching one is the same as catching three."
Lynn said matter-of-factly, "If you don't have money, you can exchange it for an equivalent amount of magic."
After a full half-minute of silence, the team pooled their money and actually bought one.
Once there's a first one, there's bound to be a second.
Soon, news of Lynn doing business in the examination hall spread like wildfire.
Some squads that had repeatedly failed and were on the verge of despair ran back to him, offering various items in exchange for their mission objectives.
The atmosphere at the Gunnar Solana has reached freezing point.
"I want to disqualify him immediately."
Gainau uttered these angry words in a flat tone.
"Let him be, Gennau."
Zanze disagreed, saying, "The rules don't say you can't catch more, nor do they say you can't give the captured birds to others."
Upon hearing this, Gainau had no choice but to remain silent.
Zanze shifted his gaze from Lynn to the sky: "Speaking of which, have you noticed...?"
"Discovered what?"
"It seems someone is working on the barrier that maintains this examination room."
"Zanze said softly."
Upon hearing this, Ganau scoffed disdainfully, "No need to worry, that's Lady Celie's masterpiece."
He picked up his teacup again, but his gaze couldn't help but drift towards Lynn, who was counting money. "The sun doesn't rise in the west."
Before the words were even finished, large raindrops poured down, instantly enveloping the entire Grob Basin in a white mist.
……
Lynn was soaked to the bone and frowned as he looked up at the sky.
"Frilian has dispelled the barrier magic."
Thinking of Lishita, who always had a stern face and looked like she was suffering from a lot of bitterness and hatred, Lynn felt a little amused.
The rain subsided, and the bell rang to signal the end of the exam.
The test takers returned to the entrance one after another.
Most of them looked disheveled and exhausted.
Lichta practically carried Duncan as they walked, their robes soaked through and covered in mud and bits of grass.
On the contrary, Laofen, apart from her slightly disheveled bun, was holding the birdcage in her hand very securely.
Lishita's face darkened when she saw Lynn: "You seem to have nothing better to do."
Lynn ignored Lichta's accusations and just stared at the cage in Laofen's hand.
Fortunately, nothing went wrong, otherwise he would have needed to quickly catch a bird and put it in a cage.
Duncan's gaze, however, fell on Lynn's feet, where several skeletons of meteorite birds lay scattered.
But when he looked up and examined Lynn again, a hint of apprehension appeared in his eyes.
"The exam is over. Now I will announce the teams that have passed the assessment."
Gainau began to announce, "The teams that have passed the test are Team 1, Team 2, Team 4, Team 8, Team 13, and Team 17. The second round of testing will be held after these three teams. You may now dismiss yourselves."
"I, Duncan, will take my leave now."
After speaking to Lynn, Duncan left the examination room with Lichta and Laofen.
"Goodbye."
Lynn nodded.
……
Back at the hotel, Lynn had a good night's sleep.
The next morning.
As soon as the door opened, I saw Philon standing in the hallway, hands on his hips, lecturing Shutark.
"Shutark, were you just sleeping? Did you stay up all night?"
Philon puffed out his cheeks and asked.
Shutark hung his head and honestly replied, "I stayed up all night, and even drank juice while I was staying up all night."
Watching the young couple bicker, Lynn muttered under her breath, "Henpecked."
Philon's ears twitched, and he looked at Lynn with icy eyes.
Lynn gave an awkward smile and quietly withdrew.
……
Stepping out of the hotel, the streets were nearly deserted.
Just as they reached the street corner, they saw Duncan, Lichta, and Laofen walking towards them from another street.
Laofen was carrying a bamboo basket filled with golden donuts that smelled enticing.
Good morning, Mr. Duncan.
Lynn took the initiative to greet him.
Duncan nodded in response.
Lichta merely gave him a cold glance.
When Laofen saw Lynn, she immediately hid the basket behind her back and said warily, "This was bought for me by the old man, I'm not sharing it with you."
Lynn looked at Duncan and said, "Old man, everyone gets a share, I want one too."
Duncan stroked his beard and smiled, "Let's go eat first, we can have dessert later if we have time."
The group walked toward a restaurant.
Lynn walked beside Laoffen, quickly reached out, and took a donut from Laoffen's basket.
Laopin felt the basket lighten and turned to look at Lynn.
Lynn was looking at the scenery as if nothing was wrong.
But there was a speck of icing sugar stuck to the corner of his mouth.
Laofen stared blankly at Lynn's lips for a long time, without saying a word, but it was as if she was saying, "Admit that you stole my donut."
Lichta sighed and muttered to herself, "Two brats."
The four of them arrived at a simply decorated restaurant.
The three members of Frilian's team were already seated inside.
Lynn waved to them when she saw them: "What a coincidence."
"Uh-huh."
Frillie simply smiled and nodded.
Philon seemed to be in a good mood, and even gave a rare smile: "Mr. Lynn, what a coincidence."
Hugh Talke also gave him a friendly smile.
Everyone took their seats and ordered their food.
The restaurant gradually became lively, with the clinking of cutlery and the sounds of conversation mingling together.
After the meal, Lynn said goodbye to everyone.
There are still three days until the second round of exams, and he doesn't plan to be idle during these three days.
The forest outside Oisaster City is home to many tough-skinned monsters, making it the perfect shooting range for Lynn now.
For three days, screams echoed from the depths of the forest.
……
Before long, the notification for the second round of the Level 1 Mage Exam arrived as scheduled.
Location: Tomb of the Fallen King.
The Tomb of the Fallen King is located in the desolate mountains north of Oisast.
Lynn arrived at the entrance to the royal tomb early.
The royal tomb is situated on a desolate mountainside, with four stone archways leading deep underground.
A large number of test takers had already gathered at the entrance, creating a tense atmosphere.
Lynn saw Duncan, Lichta, and Laoffen, and also Philon, who was fixing Frillie's hair.
They nodded to each other without saying anything more.
Before long, a petite figure appeared before everyone.
She had long, flowing hair that almost reached the ground, and her face was as delicate as a doll's, but her eyes were empty and lifeless.
It was Zanze, the chief examiner of this exam and a first-class mage.
"This is the Tomb of the Fallen King."
Zanze's voice rang out, his tone flat, "The test is simple: conquer this maze. As long as you reach the deepest part, you pass."
The crowd stirred slightly.
Suddenly, the hair behind Zanze began to wriggle as if it were alive, rolling up small, transparent glass bottles and precisely handing them to each examinee.
The bottle contained a small golem.
"This is for escaping."
Zanze continued, "If there's an emergency, crush the bottle, and the golem will bring you out. Of course, that means you've forfeited."
She paused, then added, "I'll go in too, but don't expect me to help."
"...The assessment begins."
Soon, the candidates exchanged opinions and began to take action one after another.
Lynn did not choose to travel with Frilian and her apprentice because they were all exploration players, and Frilian was especially vulnerable to being eaten by mimics.
Finally, besides Lynn, only Duncan, Lichta, Laofen, Mette Day, and Regg remained at the door.
Lynn looked at the deep passage with a sense of anticipation.
The most disgusting thing about the Tomb of the Fallen King is not the maze itself, but the "Water Mirror Demon".
It can perfectly replicate the strength, memories, and even combat skills of the person who enters.
In other words, the greatest enemy is oneself.
"My clone, huh? Interesting..."
