Chapter 136 Azik Doesn't Understand
Compared to Azik's confusion, Rosen was much more clear about his upcoming schedule and was extremely proactive.
So, while one of the deceased governors hesitated, Rosen grabbed the two temporary "cuddles" on either side and headed towards a shop outside the alley that was emitting a pleasant aroma.
"Boss, three skewers of our signature grilled meat—" Lawson had clearly done his homework beforehand, rattling off a long list of dishes fluently. Finally, he turned to the two men beside him and asked, "Can you handle spicy food?"
"I can handle it," Klein said without much hesitation. Although he preferred sweets, he could tolerate spiciness.
"I'm fine with anything." Azik hesitated for a moment, seemingly a little unaccustomed to it, before finally managing to utter an answer.
"Okay!" Rosen nodded, then looked at the boss and said, "Boss, I'll make them all mildly spicy!"
"Alright!" The boss nodded and quickly prepared the food Lawson wanted, along with three cups of milk.
"Thank you, boss. May you have a long and peaceful life!" Rosen raised an eyebrow at the complimentary drink and said with a smile.
The boss smiled upon hearing the blessing. Although the Solomon Empire didn't have the custom of wishing good people a peaceful life, he still understood the meaning. He couldn't help but ask, "Young man, are you bringing your brothers out to play?"
"Why can't it be the children?" Rosen looked puzzled.
"This young man doesn't look like someone with children," the boss said with a simple smile.
"Boss, you have a good eye for people. They really are the younger brothers." Rosen smiled when he heard this, and did not refute it. He simply nodded in agreement.
The two chatted for a few more minutes before the owner quickly went to serve the new customers.
While serving food to his "younger brothers," Lawson said, "I checked the travel guides; this is a highly-rated local restaurant, and the food is said to be quite delicious. Let's have a good meal first so we'll have the energy to play the rest of the trip!"
Azik: ————
The Death Archon wanted to say that as mythical beings, they wouldn't lack strength even if they didn't eat for several days, but looking at the fragrant roasted meat in front of him, Xiu ultimately said nothing, and simply picked up a skewer of roasted meat and took a bite.
To be honest, the taste wasn't bad, but compared to what Azik usually ate, you could clearly taste the difference in ingredients. As an existence second only to God and above all others, the Death Archon, though lacking freedom and usually treated as a tool, was someone no one dared to neglect when it came to food.
So if Azik were to evaluate it purely from a taste perspective, it would probably just be a very ordinary skewer of grilled meat, neither bad nor amazing.
But for some reason, Azik had a very special feeling as he chewed the roasted meat in his mouth.
But Azik couldn't explain exactly what made this thing so special.
"Don't just focus on eating, remember to drink your beverage. It's the boss's thoughtful gift after all!" Just then, Rosen tapped his cup and reminded him with a smile.
Upon hearing this, Azik paused for a moment before slowly picking up the milk next to him and taking a sip. The milk had a strong milky flavor and was clearly very fresh.
Seeing how obedient He was, Rosen nodded. The group ate and drank and quickly finished all the food.
Rosen then led the two to pay the bill. While paying, they chatted with the owner for a few minutes, and the owner enthusiastically recommended several famous local attractions and good shops.
After the three of them left the shop, Azik glanced back at the store, then looked down at the candy the shopkeeper had given him as they left. He suddenly looked up at Rosen and whispered, "Why?"
"Hmm, what? Why?" Rosen looked at him in confusion.
"We're just ordinary customers, why is he giving us milk and candy?" Azik really didn't understand. In his mind, a transaction is about exchanging money for goods, and there's no reason to give away freebies for no reason.
He looked at Rosen again, hesitated for a moment, and then asked, "Why are you so—merciful to these mortals?"
This is what Azik finds even more perplexing. In the Byron Empire, the hierarchy between gods and humans is clearly defined. From the gods down, from angels to demigods to ordinary beings, and then to mortals, there are huge gaps between each class. Those in lower positions can only be respectful to those in higher positions, while mortals can only kneel at the feet of gods and offer everything they have to them. Being allowed to enter the underworld is already a blessing.
But Rosen, who is clearly closer to a god than anything else, behaves like another mortal when facing a human.
"Maybe the boss gives you milk and candy because you're cute? Haha! Well, mainly because the boss is a good person!" Rosen said, suddenly reaching out and smilingly ruffling Azik's hair. As the boy's eyes widened in surprise, he continued, "As for why I'm so kind, it's probably because I'd rather be a human being than a god!"
When Azik heard Rosen's words, he didn't care about his hair that had just been ruffled; he was completely stunned.
Because Rosen's words actually challenged some of Azik's values. In Azik's mind, everyone was climbing up the social ladder at all costs. His brothers and sisters all wanted to trample him down and replace him. Although he was respectful in front of Death, he would occasionally have some disrespectful thoughts and want to ascend to that supreme position.
Because the Byron Empire was so cruel; without climbing to a high position, one could not control one's own life and would only be killed, used, and abandoned.
Azik has seen too many brothers and sisters die because of their incompetence, and he has also seen too many beings who want to become gods, whether in reality or in stories. To put it bluntly, the Blood Emperor also wanted to become a representative of gods at all costs, and even went half-mad for it.
But now a powerful being tells him that he wants to be human rather than a god. For Azik, who has lived in a social environment since childhood, this is nothing short of a reshaping of his worldview.
"I—I don't understand." Azik felt that he had never felt so confused in his entire life as he had today.
"Poor Azik, of course you don't understand." Rosen wasn't surprised by Azik's reaction at all. He half-squatted down, looked directly into Azik's eyes, and said with a smile, "In your understanding, God must always be high above, and humans can only kneel at God's feet, right?"
"Isn't that how it is?" Azik retorted. This was the education He had received since childhood. Perhaps it wasn't like this in other countries, but in the Byron Empire, whether it was because of the special nature of the God of Death himself or the special nature of the God of Death's pathways, this was common knowledge in the eyes of everyone in the Byron Empire.
